Digital vs. Paper

2982 views • Nov 23, '14 • (1) Comment

As I go through Facebook and look at the posts that are there. I see posts from DC and Marvel about buying back issues digitally for cheap money. I understand that the digital comics are an easy way to get back issues that could be hard to find. I will admit I grew up knowing nothing but technology and computers are in my everyday life no matter what I do from work to home. But I don't see the appeal of not having the book right in your hand. I understand there are risks in both digital and hardcopy books.

The hardcopy books are always subject to being destroyed in fire, flood, being ripped (kids), and so on. Then you will have to find them again and buy them and so on. But in some cases you will be able to recover them or protect them if you want to go that far with things like fire proof storage and so on. Digital though I see more of a problem.  I don't know alot about the process. But if you download to a hard drive and that crashes and you loose the hard drive then the comics are lost. If they are also saved on a cloud then I think it could be ok but I still see problems with that crashing.

To me I'd rather have the comic in my hands and be able to hold it. Also it comes down to being able to get variant covers and special covers. I doubt the companies make those for the digital issues.

Collector vs Investor

This subject was one of the posts earlier this week and I put my two cents in but when you really sit down and think about it they can be one in the same people. There are the people that reading comics is fun and more of a hobby for them. They get their books every week and can't wait to get home so that they can read them. Then they put them in the bag and boards then put the books in a box for reading again later or to add to their collection.

The there is hat person that gods to the shop buys the number ones of every book or logos online for the boos hat are popular and buys them all up then goes home and pus the on eBay pr other sits that sell comis and tryst to make a quick dollar on them. Which in some cases hurts the industry because it will drive up the prices of books that shouldn't be worth that much or just are ay over priced.

Then there is the combo of the two, which is they collect books that they enjoy reading then buy books and try and sell them right away and make a few dollars off of them. This I see as the more common kind of person in the industry. I see my self as sort of a last one that I mentioned. I read the books that imwant to collect and eventually reread. Then if I try a book I will read the first few issues and don't like it I will get rid of it by either bring it back to the shop or put it on eBay and get rid of it. I know at the shop I wont get full value back and I never put it on eBay for all its worth either. I know Its all about how much someone will pay for it. Thats the real value of the book. The people that understand that are the true collectors and not just trying to make a quick dollar.
