Gardner Fox did not rank in CBR.com's 2018 Top 50 Comic Book Writer polls. He finished #59 in 2010. He was unranked in 2020's "10 Comic Book Writers That Shaped The Industry", was #35 in ComicVine's Best Comic Book Writers of All Time list, and unranked in Dave's Faves from comicbookherald.com.

Gardner Fox, however, was a chief architect of DC's Golden and Silver Age. He was a world-builder and created the Justice Society and the Justice League.

He created or co-created the concept of a super-hero team, The Flash, Sandman, Hawkman, Dr. Fate, Starman, Zatanna, Barbara Gordon, Crime Syndicate of America, Psycho-Pirate, and dozens of other characters. He evolved Batman and his Rogue Gallery, Adam Strange, and DC's multiverse.

He won the prestigious Alley Awards in 1962, 1963, and 1964. (They were created in 1961, and we don't have polls from the Golden Age.) After that, Marvel stole the show. He was honored at the NY Comic Art Convention in 1971 and received the Jules Verne Award for Life-time achievement in 1982.

He ranks #15 for most prolific writers of all time, across all companies, with 18,846 pages, 1,631 stories, and 50 million words. For DC only, he ranks second in stories and third in pages.

He wrote comics from 1937-1973. He had to fight to get work and it finally dried up, something which is baffling to accept, but which sadly happens even in 2022 to famous creators. He then briefly collaborated with Eclipse in 1985. He was named as one of the "Fifty Who Made DC Great", an official DC book.

He passed away in 1986 with no major fanfare.

In addition to comic books, Gardner Fox was a legit sci-fi and fantasy novelist, short story author, and pulp magazine writer. Gary Gygax, of Dungeons & Dragons fame, listed Fox's work as an inspiration for the world's most popular role playing game.

Fox popularized so many tropes readers take for granted, from the concept of a superhero team to super speed to the multiverse to time traveling.
