Today I reached the 10,000 mark of submissions of my collection into ComicBookRealm.com and I learned a few things along the way.
I've worked in the publishing industry for 4 years - first in the B2B and more recent in the newspaper industry. I get it....everything is moving digital. I've seen businesses give up $20M in print revenue and replace it with $2M in digital - known as print dollars for digital dimes. It is no different in the comic book industry.
I really like reading comics on my iPad. It is really cool when you can double tap and get just a frame instead of the whole page. Then with each subsequent tap you get the next frame. It's almost like it brings the comic to life. But, I have never bought a digital comic...it's always been the free downloads. I currently have 50 or so on my iPad and, NEVER have I considered those a "collection". But, then again...what is a collection?
Well, many different definitions appear throughout the internet. But, for the most part, it all comes down to gathering, accumulating, bring together, and/or something gathered in a mass or pile.
- read moreWe all have these fantasies that our collections are going to pay for our kid's college fund or help us retire. But, in reality, if you are buying modern (and I consider modern anything from 1975 to current), then you have a collection that is "worth less" than the cover price....considerably less.
I collect stamps, too. Whenever someone comes across a stamp from the United States that was produced in the 1930's, 40's, 50's (or more recent), the first thing I tell them is to use it for postage as that is where you will get your value. They were produced in such massive quantities and in many places, you can buy them at discounts. The only stamps that are rising in value are those early production ones that are in a near mint condition (sound familiar?).
I just finished entering my collection through the letter "D" into ComicBookRealm.com (which..BTW...is a FANTASTIC site). The total catalogue value states that my collection is worth $7,000+ at this point. HA!! I would love to find a buyer that is willing to pay that! Chances are, I may get $500 (and I stress MAY). At the current rate of entering, I am guessing the value will be somewhere around $75,000. But, if I were to sell to pay for my retirement, I would be lucky to get $5,000. So, my collection (and your's) is "worth less" than you may think.
