Controversy in comics?

1177 views • Oct 25, '12 • (0) Comments

Comics are suppose to be fun, right?   I mean, they are a chance to escape into a world that only the mind can imagine.   Yet, it is the same mind that allows us to create what we think is controversial.  Do you agree with these top 10 controversies in comics?   I have a real problem with number 1 - I don't think that is controversy....it's just story telling.

Many arguments back and forth on which character is better than the other.  It's tough to compare.  I mean can you really compare Superman (a being with well....super powers) to Batman (a human with no powers)?

Well, apparently you can.  This list of the greatest comic characters has me pretty much nodding my head in agreement with all but #3.  For that, I have to give a great big - HUH?

It seems Marvel may be up in the air yet again when it comes to The Hulk.   I don't believe I have seen one character go through so many changes but, here we go again.  Look...he is nothing more than a big, muscled beast.  What's wrong with just leaving it at that?

In fact, if the below image is a step towards the direction they are wanting to take, it won't be long before we end up with a Hulk that resembles Trencher - remember that comic?

Can the Green Lantern Destroy Superman?

1146 views • Oct 24, '12 • (2) Comments

I think so (of course, DC may steal my plot....or maybe they have already done this) but....

How can this be?  Simple...although the more recent power rings are scientifically based and were created by the Guardians of the Universe, let us not forget that the orignal magically powered flame was actually a green, metal meteorite.    hhhhmmmmm......now do you know where I am heading with this?

Too Little Too Late for Todd....

Ok...I will be the first to admit that I was in comic awe in the 90's when Image exploded on the scene.   So much so, that I opened a comic book store to try and capitalize on this myself (since closed).  The way the images grabbed you with all the details and color that just jumped off of those heavy glossy pages...it was awesome.   Without a doubt, the majority of the credit for Image's success goes to Todd McFarlane.

Now you can get the inside information on the tips and tricks of McFarlane's style.

Finally! Redemption for Iron Man 2

1419 views • Oct 23, '12 • (0) Comments

I will probably be one of the only ones who will admit it but, I was dissapointed with Iron Man 2.   Albeit, I thought that Mickey Rourke as Ivan Vanko was incredible (and I wanted more of him) I just really wanted to reach into the silver screen and strangle Sam Rockwell who played Justin Hammer.

But, finally....we get a peak into the new Iron Man 3 and I say BRAVO from what I see.  With bring The Mandarin into the story, they have set it up for a lot more Iron Man to follow.

Is it May 2013 yet??

We all have these fantasies that our collections are going to pay for our kid's college fund or help us retire.   But, in reality, if you are buying modern (and I consider modern anything from 1975 to current), then you have a collection that is "worth less" than the cover price....considerably less.

I collect stamps, too.   Whenever someone comes across a stamp from the United States that was produced in the 1930's, 40's, 50's (or more recent), the first thing I tell them is to use it for postage as that is where you will get your value.   They were produced in such massive quantities and in many places, you can buy them at discounts.   The only stamps that are rising in value are those early production ones that are in a near mint condition (sound familiar?).

I just finished entering my collection through the letter "D" into ComicBookRealm.com (which..BTW...is a FANTASTIC site).  The total catalogue value states that my collection is worth $7,000+ at this point. HA!!   I would love to find a buyer that is willing to pay that!   Chances are, I may get $500 (and I stress MAY).   At the current rate of entering, I am guessing the value will be somewhere around $75,000.  But, if I were to sell to pay for my retirement, I would be lucky to get $5,000.  So, my collection (and your's) is "worth less" than you may think.

Are you REALLY a collector of comics?

1473 views • Oct 20, '12 • (1) Comment

When I take someone down to the basement and show them my "collection" they are amazed at the number of books I have.   Old comics, new comics, comics with fancy covers and comics with no covers at all - they are all good.  But, I wonder....am I really a collector or would a better term be an accumulator?

I can't help it.  Something draws me to the comics.   Whereever I am, I have a tendancy of finding the comics.  Whether its in the grocery store or a flee market at the local fourth of July celebration, I find the comics.

Sometimes I will buy long boxes off of eBay for no reason at all - I have some extra money at the time so it seemed like the right thing to do.  After all, why pay a bill now when there are comics for sale at a good price?

It's Only A Matter of Time

For many years I have listened to my wife asking "why do i have so many comics when they aren't worth anything?"   But, it wasn't until last week when my wife came down and said, "you know your son (9 years old) is reading comic books on his iPad."   That is when it hit her that it won't be long and there will be no more printed comics.  THEN!  THEN!  My collection will start having some value!  I sure hope someone is able to capitalize on it 'cuz I know it won't be me.  For now, I will just enjoy bagging, boarding, filing, and of course, reading.
