Collection Complete

The task of cataloging all my comics that was started on April 1st 2017 was finally completed on December 11th 2019. 2 years and 8412 comics in I’m ready to move on to the next phase, selling them. I already had success listing and selling some on eBay and I want to continue to see what else I can unload.

One thing I loved about this site was that most of my comics were in the database. Back in 2017 when I was searching for options Comic Book Realm was the most comprehensive when it came to different titles and variant covers. But I did come across a few titles/covers that were not listed and the process of getting them added was incredibly easy. I had fun submitting the missing titles and covers. It made me feel like I contributed to this awesome site in my own small way.

Time to let go

It's been over a  year since I made a blog entry so I figured it's about time to put some thoughts down.

Only time my collection is being updated now is when I'm buying new issues from either Midtown, My Comic Shop or eBay. Only current titles on my list are Saga, Paper Girls and East of West. Not sure what I'm going to do once these series end. I still have 4 or 5 more long boxes in storage that I need to catalog. Hopefully that'll be done by the end of next year.

I've also started putting up my comics up on eBay. I've sold 6 lots so far and I'll be listing more as time goes on. It's challenging to figure out the best way to combine some titles for maximum buyer appeal. For example I have X-Men First Class vol.1 and 2 and Wolverine First Class. I have to decide do I put all these First Class series in one lot or sell X-Men together and list Wolverine with the other Wolverine titles I have?

Why I didn't participate in FCBD 2017

As many, if not all, comic book readers and collectors know the first Saturday of May is Free Comic Book Day and this year was no exception. With 12 Gold comics and 38 Silver comics 2017 had a total of 50 titles up for grabs at participating comic book shops. My brick and mortar store experience had been that they'd let you take just a couple of titles for free during the day and you could come back later, usually after 4 or 5, to take as many as you'd want. I used to do the whole LCBS thing until I realized that could buy all the titles released on FCBD on Ebay. It defeated the purpose of FCBD but I wanted them all not just one or two.

So around 2009 I began my yearly ritual of buying of all the titles released on FCBD on Ebay. I'd find out all the titles that were released on FCBD on their website and check which seller was selling the most complete list. Most of these auctions were buy it now around $40-$50 bucks. I'd buy the lot, get the package, open it to check and make sure I got all the comics and put the box away.

And this continued till maybe 2015/2016. Almost 6-7 years of FCBD comics scattered in different rooms and different long boxes. This year I decided to end the cycle and sit out FCBD 2017. It wasn't an easy decision. Even as I wrote the blog I kept switching to the Ebay tab and seeing which seller had the complete list. My finger just itching to hit the buy it now button and continue the tradition. But no I think it's time to say good-bye and move on.

Milestone!

Cataloged over a thousand comics from my collection! And I'm not even half way done! That's about 4 long boxes and I have 4 more to go and that's not accounting for maybe the 10 or more I have in storage.

I only wish they were worth as much as comic book realm says they are. I'd be lucky to get a fraction for them. I think the easy part will be entering them on here, the hard part will be selling them. I have to decide which ones I'm going to keep and complete and which ones I'm letting go. I want to reread them and then see if I still think they're worth keeping but that will take too much time. I'll just keep the ones that I recall as being good. Even though it's been a good ten years since I read them I can still see some covers and be like that was a good comic. Spider-Man:Blue, Spider-Man:Reign I loved and I'd probably keep them.

Excited!!

After years of collecting comics in my youth, it's time to start unloading most of my collection. It was fun buying entire long box collections on ebay, going on road trips to pick collections and stopping at the local comic store to pick up the latest issues. The involuntary break in the hobby due to financial issues really took something away. It may be sacrilegious to say something like that in this blog but it is what it is. Personal situations have improved but the passion is not the same. Pull lists have shrunken and the insanity of owning a variant cover no matter the bid has subsided (but not entirely gone!).

Before I let everything go (still not sure how I’m going to do it) I figured I’d catalog what I had. Most of them are unread and even untouched. I think I was more in love with collecting (or hoarding) the comics than with reading them. After a few weeks of researching online I finally came across this site and it looks like it has everything I need to start cataloging and for that I’m excited.
