ISSUE 1
Let me get this out right up front. I'm not a huge fan of superheroes. That's not to say I don't like superheroes at all. . .it's just that I prefer the more "street level" or realistic (as realistic as comics can be anyway) heroes. About the only "Traditional" superheroes I follow on a regular basis are Batman and Captain America. . .both relatively low power when it comes to comics. I like heroes like Daredevil, Zorro, The Rocketeer, Green Hornet, The Spirit, and so on and so forth. The point is that except for this mini and a giant-size Marvel from the 70's (The Fabulous Fantastic Four), and a random issue here and there, I don't read or collect Fantastic Four, and I don't even really like them. I really can't even recall how I ended up with this mini in the first place, or recall ever reading it before.
That said. . .
I REALLY enjoyed this first issue! I was very surprised to find myself enjoying it so much. For starters, the art is fantastic. . .the cover in particular, with Johnny Storm giving Reed Richards the bunny ears in a group photo. Other standout art moments are of Reed Richards and Ben Grimm shortly after their definitely NOT approved test flight and cosmic irradiation when they were still under government quarantine. Very nicely done. Really gave an image of just how unusual these people appeared to others. And the writing was stellar as well. . .I could feel Ben Grimm's heartbreak when his girlfriend rejected him and ran away. For a comic to make me feel something like that is truly unusual. Very well done on this first issue!
But can the creative team keep it up? It's only 6 issues. How can something go off the rails in 6 lousy issues? My fingers are crossed. . .
Shaved Oriental Pirate Gorillas. . .oh my!
ISSUE 9
Okay. . .I get it now. I guess I should have before, but new arc doesn't really mean new story in this age of TPB collections of series. . .it just means a cliffhanger to encourage buying the next TPB for those not reading the series issue by issue. So my lower rating of last issue for not resolving the end of a story isn't entirely justified, as things pick up right where they left off in this issue.

BAT MAN/DOC SAVAGE SPECIAL
So what we have here is the one shot introduction to what was supposed to have been a new DC pulp-influenced universe. From what I understand, DC had the license for some of the pulp characters for a short while (with the glaring exclusion of The Shadow. . .who was already a DC character in the past. A shame) and were trying to figure out what to do with them.

ISSUE 1
I love the X-Files. I have the whole Topps run, as well as the entire T.V. series (good and bad) on DVD. I love 30 Days of Night. I have the original series signed by Steve Niles, as well as the movie (which I consider one of the few successful non-superhero comic movies). It would SEEM that the two properties would be a sweet fit for each other.
But. . .
This first issue makes me wonder if X-Files and 30 Days of Night sounds better as an idea than as an actual thing.
FBI Agents Scully and Mulder find themselves in Alaska investigating 16 beheaded bodies drained of blood and hung 40 feet in the air on a pole. Also on the case, believing it to be a serial killer he's been tracking is an old rival of Mulder's, Agent Daniel "Frenchy" French.
Niles is usually a good writer, but the dialogue seems stilted and unnatural. The art isn't doing the story any favors either. The covers are OUTSTANDING for the entire series (Especially the Sam Kieth variant for the first issue), but the interior art is pretty bad. Scully looks nothing like her T.V. counterpart and Mulder bears only the slightest resemblance. It's a fairly big fail if you're going to do a licensed property and can't get the likenesses at least halfway there.
In my opinion, this first issue is a dud. Good concept. Bad writing. Bad art.
5 more issues to go. , I hope it gets better. . .
Travel back in time with me, Ladies and Gentlemen. Marvel at the smoooooooth texture of this new thing called "Baxter Paper". Where are we? We're in a time without Facebook, without smartphones, we're in the year 1987.
