Welcome back to Longbox Junk and the second half of All-New Guardians of The Galaxy!

I came into this series with only basic knowledge of the characters gained from the movies and found it to be a pretty decent new reader-friendly gateway into the comic book versions of the Guardians of The Galaxy. . .at first.

Unfortunately, the series seemed to lose direction pretty quickly and couldn't seem to make up its mind if it wanted to draw in new readers or drift back to an existing audience.

Retro Review - The Ghost Rider #1

Let's start the New Year off right with a Retro Review for the first 2019 Longbox Junk post!

If you're new to Longbox Junk (Welcome, and thanks for reading!) "Retro Reviews" are sorta special editions that show up every now and then where I take a look at some of the more "collectible" comics I own instead of my usual dollar box fare.

They're still comic book reviews NOBODY ever asked for. . .the comics are just worth a few more dollars, is all.

Continuing with my attempt to connect a bit more with modern mainstream Marvel comics (with the assistance of my new Longbox Junk collaborator, my comic lovin' daughter), I've been given this fairly short and recent run of Guardians of The Galaxy to consider.

I have to admit that I really have no knowledge of Guardians of The Galaxy outside of the movies, which I think (in my extremely humble opinion) are some of the best Marvel has on offer.  But I wouldn't mind learning a little more.

From what I understand, this series was created for people JUST like me, who got a taste of The Guardians with the movies and want some more of their adventures.  It features the same team line-up and similar character designs from the movies, and even though it fits into established comic continuity, it sort of trims things down a bit for new readers.  In other words, this is supposed to be a comic that's been shaped by the movies more so than other Marvel titles.

We interrupt "Merry Marvel Mainstream Madness" for a special DC Christmas edition of Longbox Junk because my daughter and I are both extremely light on Marvel Christmas issues. . .as in, we don't have any.

Welcome back to another special "Retro Review" edition of Longbox Junk, where I step away from my usual dollar box fare and take a look at some of the older or more "valuable" comics lurking in my 45 Longboxes.

Sheesh. . .45 boxes? My local comic shops should send me a Christmas card thanking me for clearing out their unwanted inventory.

Disclaimer time!

IF YOU GRIT YOUR TEETH AT THE THOUGHT OF "SOCIAL JUSTICE" OR "FORCED DIVERSITY" IN COMICS, DO NOT READ THIS REVIEW.

In keeping with my current efforts to more familiarize myself with the current state of Mainstream Marvel Superhero Comics, I've enlisted my comic collectin' daughter to help me out a bit.

With a few exceptions (such as Captain America, Punisher, and Moon Knight), I'm just not really interested in much that Marvel has been putting out for quite a while now, as far as their superheroes go.

It's not that I don't like Marvel. . .it's just that honestly I'm more of a DC guy when it comes to NEW comics.  Give me some Bronze-Age Marvel, though, and I'm a happy man.

Retro Review - Fantastic Four #50

Welcome to another "Retro Review" edition of Longbox Junk, where I take a look at some of the more "Collectable" or "Valuable" comics I own instead of my usual dollar box fare.  This time out (in keeping with my current focus on Mainstream Marvel comics) we're taking a trip back to 1966 for a look at Stan "The Man" Lee and Jack "King" Kirby's Fantastic Four #50.

I have to admit something right off the top here. . .

I've never been a fan of the Fantastic Four.

Fair Warning: This is an "All Ages" series.  Just bear with me. . .

I know that I'm writing toward an adult audience, but sometimes even adults just want to have a little fun in their comics, right?  I know I do from time to time.  So why not check out what's going on in some of those comics you might otherwise pass over as kiddy fare?

Allow me to explain. . .

Longbox Junk - X-Men: Phoenix - Endsong

Let's get this out in the open right from the start. . .

I don't like the X-Men.  I never have.

It's not that I HATE the X-Men, it's just that I'm not a big fan of "mainstream" costumed superhero comics (with a few exceptions like Captain America, Moon Knight and Batman), and I'm even less of a fan of "team" books.  So where I'm a fan of Batman and Captain America, I'm not a reader of Avengers or Justice League.  I just prefer stories to concentrate on one character and their supporting cast.

Longbox Junk - Silver Surfer: Parable

With the recent passing of Stan "The Man" Lee, it's inevitable that there will be a flood of tributes complete with lists of great characters, classic issues, and epic storylines. . .of which there are indeed many.  Stan Lee was a prolific writer with a great imagination and creative talent and, along with equally-talented collaborators such as Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, he helped to create many of the characters that we know and love today.

So of course we're going to hear about Spider-Man, The Fantastic Four and The X-Men.  We're going to hear about "This Man, This Monster" and "Spider-Man No More", among many other classic stories. . .and rightly so!

BUT. . .
