  • We all know sales are down and stores are closing but would be interesting to see figures, e.g. how many comic books are printed now vs last year and the year before? Will the drop even out or is it just a continual downward trend?

Even sites like our own comicbookrealm seem to be quieting down if we look at the forums. Would anyone wager any predictions on where we're heading, especially those in the know?

Also, how significant has the prevalence of online sales affected local stores since you just click a button and search instead of sifting through boxes and boxes of old comics in your local store, even though many of us probably don't mind doing just that?

  • Yes, I have been curious about this as well. My local shop in Madison, WI seems to stay fairly busy. I am rarely the only person in the store and I usually go during the day on a weekday (Wednesday or Friday). Back in the day they use to keep a bunch of back issues in store, but now that is only on-line. They do have some back issues but only for current series on the shelves.

Trinity seems to be doing pretty good at the cons and on Whatnot with their Peach exclusives. Laughing

  • yes comics are trending down, happened many times in the past, eventually there will be a resurgence, and again after that they will fall off. Thats why you hold onto these and dont go for the quick flip necessarily... they are an investment, so it may be another 25 years before they are trending up significantly again... its a long term roller coaster ride...

  • harder to invest when grading costs/reliability is so poor
% cost for $$ slabs is so deflating

  • From what I've seen and I don't own a single slab by the way, but some guys who have invested quite a bit in slabs can't recoup what they've paid when they sell it. Unless it's a really sought-after comic, you'll be sitting with that slab for long AFTER you've left this life Smile

But then, if general comic sales are trending down one would expect the same with slabs if not even more so and especially if the quality of the certification is called into question . . . then what's the point?

I obviously have no issues with whatever grading someone is willing to spend on.

  • Going by what I saw on Comic Book day, comics shouldn't be trending to far down. I went to the closest shop near me and the lineup was 50+ long outside. I was short on time so I went to shop #2 where it was busy. It was a small downtown shop so they had an extra space on the side of the building just for free comic book day. They hauled out their overstock and put it on sale too. Got a few Savage Sword of Conan missing issues and called it a day.
