  • Yeah I miss the days when comics were under .75 cents. If they ever go back to being on newsprint just to bring down cost I honestly wouldn't mind.

I see you've started reading digital comic issues, I'm just curious what device you're using? I tried it back a few years ago on an early android tablet and just could not get use to pinching fingers to zoom in and swipe back and forth.

  • Rapha, reading digital comics is so much easier these days, and with something called guided view, you can read them a panel at a time. I've put a youtube video link here that shows what that looks like. When you see the video, you'll notice the guy is swiping the screen to go panel to panel, but with my tablet, if I just touch the far right edge, it works also, allowing you to just tap with your thumb each time you are ready to move to the next panel. A double tap on the page takes you back out to the full page view, which is very nice.

I bought a cheap, large Android tablet so that I could read comics on it, and wanted a newer one that would work with updated apps. I'm an Amazon Prime member, and now Amazon Prime has a couple dozen digital comics you can read, and this works well with them. Here is a link to my tablet, which sometimes gets lowered to $79.99. I have no complaints about it, as it's primary use is for comic reading.

Besides comiXology, which has a number of free comics, the Marvel app works exactly the same. And you can now connect your comiXology app with your Amazon account, which I recommend, because this allows you to read digital comics bought from Amazon to be read on the comiXology app. And Amazon often has much better sale prices. Today, for example, they have the Spider-Man: Spider-Island collection, which is $24.99, for just $4.99 on Amazon. I love the convenience of reading them digitally at night in bed, because I don't need a lamp on, which my wife appreciates! Let me know if I can answer any other questions.

  • Thanks so much for featuring my teammates, er, I mean the Legion in this week's episode! I really enjoyed that issue as it also featured two great reprints of great stories from the days the LSH appeared in Adventure Comics. You will never disappoint me when you are writing about my guys, so thanks Ed!!!

  • Tenzil, I consider myself a bit of a latecomer to the Legion (early Eighties was my first exposure), but enjoyed their stories the moment I started reading them. The good part is that I have so many more to read. The first time I read them was The Great Darkness Saga...what a great place to start! Thanks for continuing to read!

  • I remember when the 100 pagers were 50c it wasn't too hard to scrounge up another dime to get 4 books. When they went up to 60c I had a hard time deciding whether I should get a 100 pager with two 20c books or five 20c books. By '74 all the regular books were turning 25c and all I had was a dollar week for allowance. My parents never factored in inflation for my comic book addiction. Laughing

  • mrhan1, we'll never see prices like those again, with the exception of our comic shops having quarter boxes sometimes. You can get some great prices on digital comics, especially through Amazon, but there is no collectible resale value with those.

  • I believe it was the digital color process and paper quality that made comics go up in price. Like I said earlier I wouldn't mind if publishers went back to the old process (newsprint and offset halftone color) to bring down price. I think in today's market the old school method would probably bring the cost of a comic book down to at least $1.50 or less.

  • Rapha, I agree on the paper issue. Since I read lots of older back issues, especially from the Seventies, I have no problem with the newsprint paper. It actually makes me feel more nostalgic in a good way!
