  • As I continue my contribution to this great site by filling in information, reading and reviewing runs of comics I have that are generally not worth a thing as far as collector value goes (because who else is gonna do it?), I've decided to start a blog here with the reviews if anyone is interested. I'll give the short version rundown in this thread so that people can see what I'm currently working on. I haven't started blog entries yet. . .probably set that up tomorrow if you want to see what I thought of each and every issue.

Just finished up with Ghost Rider 2099 tonight. All 6 good issues and 19. . .not so good.

I really liked the IDEAS contained in this series, and a unique take on a fairly overplayed character. But although the concept was brilliant, the execution was fatally flawed by being a mainstream comic sold by a mainstream company. It was supposed to be about going against the status quo, but ended up being forced to maintain the status quo.

I loved it at first, then hated it and had to force myself to stick with it, but at least the ending wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Sort of like with my third wife.

  • WINTER WORLD (3 issue mini)

All in all, this was a short, sweet, and quick reading mini. I thought it was pretty good for what it was. . .an introduction to a new world. Unfortunately, that world so well introduced in this series wasn't revisited for a LONG time. As a standalone tale though, it does a good job. There were weak parts, like the main character's trained ex machina pet badger, but otherwise I'd suggest this mini for a good read.

  • Just got done tonight with IDW and Wildstorm's 2010 6 issue X-Files/30 Days of Night crossover mini.

It was bad. The only good thing about it was the covers.

X-Files/30 Days of Night will now be the lower bar for which all other comics I review will be judged by until I find something worse. And believe me. . .I can't really see that happening. This series is truly the definition of Longbox Junk.

  • Just got done with something a bit more recent. . .Marvel's Star Wars Princess Leia 2015 5 issue mini

All in all, I really liked this whole series. There were a couple of issues where it looked like things were slipping off course a little bit, but Mark Waid kept a steady hand on the wheel and gave us a very nice little piece of Star Wars focused less on space battles and the force and more on how do you keep a people together when they no longer have a home. Nicely done.

  • Just finished up with DC's First Wave 6 issue mini and the Doc Savage/Bat man special tie in.

Gritty characters like gun-toting Bat Man, The Spirit, and Doc Savage in a new pulp-influenced universe? Count me in! Unfortunately, this is another case of a great idea ruined by poor execution. The writer tried to force epic onto street level characters and failure followed. This series definitely had some good elements to work with, but it went off the rails in a big way toward the end. A shame and a lot of wasted potential. Still worth a read, though, if only to get angry about what COULD have been if Azzarello had only narrowed his focus and kept it on the street.

  • Just got done with Boom Studios 16 issue run of Planet Of The Apes

Overall, I'd say that if you are looking for a surprisingly good political/war story that dives deep into subjects like racial discrimination, class warfare, terrorism and insurgency, and the Holocaust, then definitely give Planet of The Apes a look. It has fantastic writing and art and is a hidden gem to be sure.

Just prepare to be disappointed in the ending. The final 4 issues go off the rails and the final issue leaves every single plot thread hanging unresolved. I was extremely disappointed to say the least, because the rest of the series is top quality comics.

  • Just got done with Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Family 6 issue mini.

A strong start and a weak ending, but I have to say that overall I liked most of this series. I wasn't a fan of the Fantastic Four coming in, and this didn't change my mind, but it had some really good story moments before they decided it HAD to end with a big battle. Great artwork as well. . .but for some reason, the artist never got a handle on Sue Storm. Other than that, it was a great looking series.

All in all, I'd definitely suggest this book to anyone that wants to know about the origin of the Fantastic Four.

Coming next: More superhero action (sort of) as we see the former Batgirl take a shower in one of DC's "Battle For The Cowl" tie in mini's. . .Oracle: The Cure!

  • Happy New Year, everyone!

Just finished up with DC's Oracle: The Cure 3 issue "Battle For The Cowl" tie in mini.

First. It isn't really a Battle For The Cowl tie in as much as it is a Final Crisis epilogue.

Second. It assumes the reader has knowledge of Final Crisis, as well as all characters on deck for the mini.
It is NOT new reader friendly. Not suggested for any sort of introduction to Oracle.

Third. Oracle is pretty heavily sexualized in this one. So if you need a safe space to hide from microagressions, don't even look at the covers. Just. . .don't. I don't want to hear your friggin' whining about visual assault.

Fourth. It's a mess. It has good points, but they are few and far between.

  • Just got done with the DC 1994 Huntress 4 issue mini. . .

I really liked this version of The Huntress and wish that DC would have stuck with it. I think it would have made a great Vertigo title. Less Birds of Prey superhero style and more Punisher antihero style. A dark and brutal version of Huntress that would put her boot squarely up in the WTF mess that the New 52 made of the character. A nice little hidden gem I had forgotten about in my collection.
