- Holy cow, the first appearance of The Batman Who Laughs has skyrocketed. Teen Titans #12 is routinely going for north of 40 now. I suspect the price will settle in the coming months/years. Am I wrong to assume this? It is a first appearance, but the story is still active. In essence I'm wondering if jumping on it now is worth the long term investment? Wouldn't be looking to get my money back immediately, maybe in 10-20 years.
On a related note, how valuable are tie ins longer term? I'm in love with the ones I have, but the others are pricey (I fell out of comics temporarily at the wrong time). I've never really seen tie in retain their value from an event story. What's CBR's experience with tie ins?

- Swifty, you have to remember that this story is a "What If". There may be no other stories with the Batman Who Laughs ever again once the story arc is done. I personally wouldn't buy the first appearance for $40-$50. You should invest in books that you like first, as opposed to what book will skyrocket in value. It's impossible to predict what will be hot and what will not.

Thanks for that. I hadn't realized it's a "what if." Is there a publication I missed?
As far as me liking it, I'm LOVING the story. Not much one for tie ins or one-shots related to a comic event, complacency let me shrug off the additional stories outside of the main arc. Began reading Metal last week and fell in love with the main and the bits I picked up along the way. Don't really mind having the first appearance, just want a complete collection of all metal issues (1st printings). This would be for my personal collection. However, if I'm to put 40-50 bucks into a single issue - I'm eventually going to turn it around.

- Technically Marvel uses the term "What If" whereas DC uses "Elseworlds". Same thing, really.
All these alternative earths make my head spin. Why not just make a good Batman book instead of making him more like Joker? I'll never know. These type of Specials are invented for one reason: Making DC comics a boat-load of money, nothing else. Both Marvel and DC are super-guilty of these shenanigans. Don't fall for the hype!!!

- I realize how the non-cannon stories go, but I don't see that here. They go as far to include the current Justice League, Hal Jordan GL, suicide squad, Teen Titans and others in the story line. I think this does effect the DCU. Infact, I vaguely remember that the events here spawn this whole "No Justice" bit that is happening next.
I'm a pretty vocal that my two least favorite storytelling devices are other other universes and time travel. That being said, the way it's handled in Metal is wonderful. Not a crutch, but a fluid cause of the story.
The way I collect is- I assume - odd. I'll dip my toes in new stuff. If I like it, I'll keep buying it. If I LOVE it, I track down the first prints.
Think I should just give it time, Brucifer?

- That's exactly what I needed to hear. Thank you.
Gamble now/gamble later. History appears to be on the side of patience. I will wait...with an itchy trigger finger. Doing Wonder-con this weekend, as Brucifer and I have discussed at length, keep my eye open there...although I'd imagine they want top dollar for their goods.
Thank you both for all of your insight. I appreciate it greatly.

- Is it confirmed this is a Elseworlds story? I thought it was in the regular DC universe.

- If the Metal imprint sells well (it has), DC can call it whatever they want!!! Who knows if this will be a thing in 5-10 years? It may not have the Elseworlds label on the book, but with all the multiple storylines, alternative worlds and movie tie-ins, it sure sounds like it to me.

AmZoMBiE said: I didt think these were elseworlds either...but i dont have a clue lol Can confirm, this is DC cannon. The events that happen in #6 - Which I would LOVE to talk about - but spoilers - are shaping the direction of the DCU. Snyder actually mentioned this at Wondercon. In fact, this is why they moved from DC Rebirth and rebranded DC Universe. Exciting stuff.
Great time to be reading DC.
