  • Obviously everyone who uses CBR loves comic books. That's a given. We have been very lucky to have our favourite heroes appear in movies and TV shows in the last decade or so.

What I'm looking for is your absolute best casting pick in a comic book movie or TV show. Here's my top 5:

    1) Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark (aka Iron Man)
Everyone knows Mr. Downey is a good actor. He's battled his own addictions over the years. He went to rehab for his drug use (thanks Dad?) and was finally clean enough in the early '00s to rejuvenate his acting career. Kudos to Jon Favreau for taking a chance and giving Mr. Downey a chance to shine as Tony. Perfect casting.

    2) Heath Ledger as The Joker (The Dark Knight movie)
There certainly aren't very many comic book movies that have won legit awards besides makeup, cinematography or sound editing. Mr. Ledger did such a smashing job as the terrifying Joker, we ALL believed in him and he won an Academy Award for his effort. Too bad, much like The Joker, he couldn't control his demons.

    3) Peter Serafinowicz as The Tick (Tick TV show 2016-19)
Mr. Serafinowicz did such a great job as the Tick, I can't see him doing anything else, ever. He's mostly known as a voice actor, with loads of credits in the last 20 years. His acting job as the Tick was so very perfect, and that's not as easily done as some may think.

    4) Dominic Purcell as Mick Rory or Heat Wave (Legends of Tomorrow TV show)
Mr. Purcell is so very good as the love-to-hate-him Mick Rory in Legends. Yes, he's a villain and not a very nice man, but his lines and stoic acting are a pleasure to watch. I've been re-watching Legends of Tomorrow recently and his presence makes the show a real hoot. Not to mention his constant beer drinking and eating in most scenes on the Waverider.

    5) Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle (aka The Punisher)
Yes, Mr. Bernthal is the fourth actor to play The Punisher. No slight against Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jane or Ray Stevenson, but Mr. Bernthal is the perfect Punisher. He was born to play that role. His short-lived Netflix TV show wasn't the best thing out there, but he was absolutely believable as our favourite anti-hero.

What do you think? I want to hear some more picks from the regular CBR members. What did I miss?

  • I like Paul Bethany as Vision.
that actor is such a pure being in every film they're in.
maybe also Rebecca Romijn as Mystique as favorites go

  • Nice picks Sugar Shark. I only listed my top 5, but there are a bunch of other good ones out there as well, as you proved with your two choices.

  • Howdy Brucifer. Robert Downey and Peter Serafinowicz are great picks. I remember hoping to see Rob Riggle as the Tick, but Serafinowicz was perfect. I'll limit myself to five as well, no particular order.

Christopher Reeve will always be superman in my eyes, but Henry Cavill was the perfect choice to fill those shoes. Bummed we won't see him in the role again.

Michael Keaton is my favorite Batman, perfect portrayal of both Bruce and Bats.

Vincent D'Onofrio as Kingpin was amazing, hard to picture anyone else in the role now.

Chadwick Boseman as Black Panther, sort of glad they aren't replacing him because anyone else would be a step down.

Brandon Lee as Eric Draven in The Crow, tragic what happened but he was perfect for that character.

Here's a new category: Portrayals by actors you never heard of before the film, but were outstanding. Two immediately come to mind for me:

    Gal Gadot as Wonder Woman
    Karl Urban as Judge Dredd

There has never been a film made for my favorite character (Groo) I would love to see Jack Black as Groo the Wanderer.

  • That's some great picks Nf7. I originally had Vincent D'Onofrio as the Kingpin. I guess that's my number 6?

Karl Urban was terrific as Judge Dredd, but an unknown? He's appeared on both Hercules and Xena, The second Lord of the Rings movie, Doom, the way underrated Pathfinder, a few new Star Trek movies, Thor and (the very best for last) The Boys. He's the most famous unknown actor out there.

I also would like to see Groo on the big screen. He's definitely not my favourite character ever, but it would be a fun, goofy movie.

  • Lol well I was unfamiliar with Urban until Dredd. Admittedly, I'm terrible at remembering the names of actors and actresses, and not even that great at recognizing them. My wife is amazing at this, almost to the point of being a party trick. I'll see someone who sort of looks familiar in a show and ask her who it is, and she will give me from memory their name, a near complete filmography, and some tidbits about their personal life.

  • Love this idea, tough to make sure you get everyone also.

1 Hugh Jackman Wolverine. Think he's been an awesome wolverine. He body of work says it all

    2. Chris Evans - Cpt. America. Really embodied his ideals with modernizing his issues with how corrupt politics and the world has become and his fitting into this world.

    3. Michael Fassbender - Magneto Just carried the eternal anger as Magneto better and made you understand his motivations better IMO. I hope he plays the role again

    4. Jon Bernthal - The Punisher... I thought they were never going to get this right. I mean Dolph Lungren was the best they did before this and that's not great. Jon brought the intensity and the anguish needed for this character. Just brilliant. So glad he's coming back

    5. Hayley Attwell - Peggy Carter superb acting, good story telling and a series ended far too soon.

  • You also have some good picks there drew. I finally saw the most recent Doctor Strange movie and I was quite pleased that Hayley Attwell was included (although briefly) as Captain Britain.

I really should have picked Hugh Jackman as well. I have no idea how they're going to replace him for the next X-Men movie. Good luck is all I have to say, they'll need it.

  • I love a lot of your picks Brucifer. RDJ, Heath Ledger and Jon Berthnal (I would often find myself saying "Bad a** Frank, bad a**" to no one in particular as that music for the end credits played) top choices. Peter Serafinowicz though, I have to challenge you on. IMO Patrick Warbuton was a better Tick. His complete lack of self awareness, added to the dry sense of humour. I enjoyed the Amazon Prime show and was gutted when it was cancelled, but Warburton nailed the live action version of the Tick for me.

  • isbadiz, I didn't mind Patrick Warburton as the very first live-action Tick. He definitely did a good job. I believe the Amazon Tick show was just ten times better. That might explain my Peter Serafinowicz pick. He was channeling his inner Adam West, that's for sure.

  • You guys mentioned some really good ones. I'll try and add a few not mentioned yet...

Josh Brolin, in both roles as Thanos and Cable.

Tobey Maguire for capturing the Peter Parker that I remember reading in comics.

Though not the greatest film, I still enjoyed Doug Jones as The Silver Surfer (Fantastic Four: Rise of The Silver Surfer).

  • Elias Koteas as Casey Jones in the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.

Also agree with a few others that have been mention but especially Karl Urban as Dredd. Really hoping for a sequel to that still. haha

Alfred Molina as Doc Ock. Glad to see him reprise it.

Personally for me Danny DeVito as Penguin. Granted haven't seen any of the other but he'll always be the Penguin to me.

  • We can all agree that as far as non-hero casting for the movies JK Simmons as J Jonah Jamieson is been as perfect at Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. Can't see anyone else bringing that kind of energy to the role. What an actor he is.
