Cerebus TV - Something for everyone!

As Dave's long-time friend as well as Cerebus.TV producer editor, Max Southall has this to say about Dave's commitment to encouraging comics talent through self-publishing and creators' rights:

"It's no secret that often teachers can crush development as well as nurture it. I remember well Dave's and my time back in high school, when artistic talent of other than a very narrow and stifling definition was often discouraged during formal schooling, if not outright strangled, by those who couldn't create themselves.

"I supported Dave's artistic development then and his courageous decision to leave school early to pursue his artistic dreams - now so fulfilled and vindicated."

"I'm afraid that too often in the past a 'learning' environment hostile to creativity has been best described by Pink Floyd's "The Wall" album and the exhortations to 'leave them kids alone'.

"Dave's new 'Guide to Self-Publishing' is a stunning vindication of everything that Dave has learned and accomplished since that time - and his commitment and encouragement to fellow-artists engaged in the same struggle to emerge and be rewarded properly.

"Dave just sent me this timely voice message that sums up the philosophy that drives him - and is the raison d'etre for his making helping others monetarily achieve their artistic goals such a central part of his life's work."

  • Cerebus.TV Self Publishing Week July 30

Thinking of entering the comics field? Recently tested the waters? Then you owe it to your own future to get Dave Sim's new Cerebus Guide to Self Publishing, available online at http://CerebusTV.com (and at finer comic stores - Diamond Order APR100706).

While no one else can put a price on success, any number of simple errors - and overlooking the strategies necessary to succeed, make the Cerebus Guide to Self-Publishing indispensable. You've heard all the testimonials about Dave's influence from successful comics creators as they were interviewed by John Scrudder on the many Cerebus.TV video segments featuring them - now get the benefit of all that experience, in one place, between the covers of the new Cerebus Guide to Self Publishing.

Stephen Holland, co-owner of Page45, the UK's most influential and long-lived comics store:

"Without a doubt I would not want to enter this industry as a creator without having read this first, regardless of whether I intended to self-publish or sell my creativity to/through other publishers. That's not just my memory talking, I've re-read this now from cover to cover to note what's new and sell it afresh.

"Dave addresses almost every aspect of successful comic book publication and a great many aspects of comic book creation including the nuts and bolts of what it takes to stay on schedule and impress a potential readership into buying your wares. But as much as it's an encouragement to create professionally and hold onto your creative rights, it's in equal measure a wake-up call for those deluding themselves into imagining they have enough drive and self-discipline to do any of the above.

"In various chapters then, Sim, talks candidly about the following:
"How the Direct Market for comic books works and how to make it work best for you: printing, distribution, retail; inspiration, dedication and understanding the perspective and mechanics of comic book retailers; publishers' practices, legal contracts and those contracts played out; cash management, time management and keeping your work in print. What happens when you're late.

"Art materials and the basics of composition from start to finish: boards, pencils, pens and brushes; lettering and layout; pencilling and inking; use of tones and the printing process.

"A career in comics: back round to ownership again, including thoughts on when and if to sell your original art, royalties, and the shifting sand that isn't the bedrock you might think at a great many publishers - you may get on with one editor, but the next you're assigned may simply dump you; Image comics; working with other people, for other people, or just on your own; making direct contact with retailers and promoting your comic.

"Comics and Hollywood: TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES, SPAWN, Alan Moore etc.. How the Hollywood mindset works.

"Web comics and "the line of least resistance" (i.e. getting your work in the hands of readers with the fewest barriers between you): virtual creation, physical publication and the computer itself; the importance once more of a regular schedule.

"Print On Demand:  as a new alternative to entry-level publication which allows more experimentation with less financial outlay; even if the profits aren't as good as the minimum 2,000 run most printers demand, you don't have to invest in 2,000 copies if you don't know for sure you can sell them.

"Throughout the work there's an informed history of how these various scenarios have worked or failed for so many individuals whether named or not. Experience is vital, that's what Dave's talking from, and it would be foolish to the point of hubris not to take advantage of it.'"

To misquote Abbie Hoffman, "BUY THIS BOOK!" (Stealing it wouldn't be fair to self publishers!)

More segments of interest to self-publishers on Cerebus TV this episode (Cerebus.TV's aim is to promote self-publishing and independent creators, naturally):

    Small Press Comics Focus
