  • I remember getting a few things from my dad when I was little. but it wasn't comprehensive by all means.

I watched the X-Men cartoon as a kid, and always enjoyed the other forms of media (tv shows, movies, etc.) that referenced comic book characters.

In high school I really started getting into graphic novels because I was a dark gothy metalhead type, and I loved Watchmen, Sin City and V for Vendetta.

It's not until recently that I've gotten back into comics-comics, and I have to admit, a lot of the movies coming out helped push me back in that direction. Whatever, I'm a poser.

What got you into comic books?

  • My Mom's friend was into them when I was a kid. He took me to a small con in Buffalo and after I met Steve Ditko, I was hooked after that. Unfortunately I did not get his autograph. d'oh!

  • My brother bought a copy of DC Heroes role playing game.

It had descriptions and powers / abilities for each of the major heroes.... I'd heard of all the Justice League ones already, but not the Teen Titans. I then got The Judas Contract TPB as a Christmas gift, and kept buying stuff from there.

Prior to that, I had read some comics, but not bought them regularly (I think I had the Batman movie tie-in and some Asterix books)
    Currently Reading:
Graphic Novels: Nightwing (90s series), Lumberjanes
    Regular Novels: Chronicles of Prydain

  • I loved Batman and Spider-man and Robin growing up from maybe 2 or 3. I even remember having the Joker, Batman, Robin, Riddler, Penguin and Spock and Batman vehicles of Mego toys when I was a toddler and playing with them nonstop.
But what got me going into stores every week buying comics was the Marvel Universe Cards, 1st series when they were first released. I never knew of X-Factor and thought the cards was awesome looking, like why did Iceman wear a big metal belt? Who the was Archangel and he looked badass. Same with Ghost Rider, Moon Knight and other cards just made me interested in them. Around that time also came out the first appearance of the new Robin, Jason Todd. So I went to a store for that issue and the same week or around the same time X-Force #1 came out, had no clue what it was but picked it up and loved it. Not long after that was X-Men #1, After that I started buying comics every week.
Before that I had the TPB's of Death in the Family, Wolverine mini and the Punisher min and read stuff here and there. but it was those cards that made me start going religiously

  • My mom used to always pick up Savage Sword of Conan and read it with me. I also used to watch Foofur and Madballs cartoons. Once I found comics for those cartoons it was all over for me. I was hooked.

  • Wow labria, and I thought my dad was cool, for watching The Wall with me...

I always liked superheros, especially Spider-Man. Long story short, after watching "Amazing friends", Batman (movie and cartoon) Spider-Man TAS and the other 90s (great) cartoons, and especially after reading some stuff I was hooked. As a kid I loved Conan, ASM, Spawn and Sandman I was hooked.

EDIT: The comic that made me a collector however was Peter Parker vol 2 #25, the end of Revenge of the Green Goblin.

  • Maybe I am just too old to remember.

Remember little from 1950s due to age.

Became hooked on four color reading in 1960s.

Read DC and Marvel religiously in late 60s and early 70s.

Independents were regarded as non DC or Marvel comics.

I am a staunch Batman guy but Superman not one of my favs.

Still choose Batman movie with Adam West over all later flicks.

    Best.

  • Well, as a wee laddie, me Mum would read the Sunday comics to me on her lap. Tarzan, Tracy, Batman, Superman, Katzenjammers, etc. Then I started reading myself and got into comics. First with DC and all the Superman & Batman titles, then Fantastic Four came out and started collecting Marvels, plus Disney, and finally started picking up EC titles.

Too bad that I sold off most of my collection in the early 70's. Sad But then I discovered Yahoo auctions and eBay and most of the 90's and 2000's spent rebuilding much of my collection.

  • My dad got me into comics. He was a mechanic/foreman for Greyhound for over 50 years. When a bus would pull in and everyone got off he would get on and pick up stuff people left behind, (i'm guessing there was no such thing as a lost/found dept. back in the 40's thru 70's). To this day my older cousins still tell stories of the comics Uncle John brought home and gave them and wishing they had kept them. Then in the early 70's when I could read/enjoy them he would bring them home to me, one time he brought home a skateboard. Then eventually it became a family joke.."Where did you get that?" "FOB"..found on bus. People left all kinds of stuff behind.
Growing old is mandatory...Growing up is optional.

Yahoo Auctions was great. Not a lot of people were on Yahoo and you could find awesome deals.
