The article says it was a real pumpkin. The only "cheat" was gluing parts of the pumpkin back on to make the hair.

Plus, he would have no idea how thick the wall is (it can vary). So either it is a "fake" pumpkin, or he was really, really, lucky that he didn't hit a "shallow" area. Heck my pumpkins I just carved had at most a 1 inch "shell". Maybe he bought a guaranteed 4 inch thick one? Favorite Quote: "You're not just some guy in a bat costume are you?
