  • I've been a computer programmer for Boeing for 12 years now, mostly in C++ for a standalone program. We just used Visual Studios and our program was a plug-in for a CAD system.

This past year my eyes have opened because now I'm working on a web application involving javascript, xhtml, java, databases ... not to mention this Agile process [whole other topic on that bullshit] involving programs all on its own, like clearcase, version one, etc.

I realize now the 12 years experience I had is almost worthless now. I know almost nothing about javascript, SQL, xhtml, etc. I'm doing alright now and learning as we go, but .... talk about a sheltered life. The good news is once you know how to program, a new language isn't a big deal as long as it's the same type of language. Plus I took Programming Languages in college and learned all the different types, like prolog, lisp, machine language, etc. It's just this web stuff.

Anyone else here work with computers? What programs/languages do you use?

  • I am in the tech support side of the industry, but I did some website development for a couple of years. Mostly HTML with some basic PHP, I wanted to follow up on that but then changed jobs to Support and since have gotten into System/Network admin and Cisco firewall/router maintenance.

We use a little vbscript and powershell, but not much scripting going on for the techs. Our devs are a mix of SQL, Java, .Net and DBL developers. Problem is, we have been going through a lot of turnover in our development area so as soon as we get people trained up and ready to work, they leave. Toxic environment, but one reason has been the fact that the devs have to learn multiple languages to make stuff work. Too much spaghetti coding going on.

  • No more, I retired last year, but spent the past 25 years as IT Manager and Software Development Manager. Last 8-10 years not so much in coding and analysis as managing a group. Not by my choice, I still love it. This was primarily internal applications and many reports. Mostly SQL. At the end I still had a few legacy applications that were used daily and that I still maintained.

I do miss it a lot and I'm thinking of posting on Craigslist for some small jobs between trips.

What tools did you use to create this? Languages, programs, etc.?

Have any of you guys ever had to use a software development process at work like Agile?

  • LAMP is what CBR.com (and my other projects) run on.

I have been "subjected" to just about all of them. AGILE, Waterfall, TDD, BDD, etc.

Personally I like Waterfall the best.

  • I am also a professional programmer. I use C# and .Net as well as javascript and SQL. I mainly program for the web but also do windows applications.

If you want to see some of my handiwork head over to www.disciplesoftheland.com It's a site about Final Fantasy XIV. It has run for app. 2 years and now I am working on reprogramming it all more or less from scratch LOL I needs to be a lot faster and more intuitive so I decided to do it all again. It's a learning process and I can use the experience in my professional life so that is great.

Also it needs to look better and I have been photoshopping a bit to get a new more modern look. So that means you will have to check it out in month or so again.

  • Yeah...I don't do design. I just hire someone (usually 99designs.com) to do that. Of course I haven't had anyone do it for CBR.com yet, but I will eventually.

  • I own a small business in the western half of the US that specializes in creating video games/doing animations that can be used as animated style movies. It's fun stuff for me, favorite part is probably mapping it out and building the models.

I also have a few years of Java under my belt, as well as some work in Python. Then I did a lot of web based HTML when I was younger, but I haven't played with that stuff in a few years now. The coding is not my strong suit compared to the modeling and animation though tbh.
