Finishing up Gears 3 now and rented Dark Souls for the week while the wife is out of town. That's right I like to be beaten hard and often. Smile

Laughing How are you finding Dark Souls? Though hard, I heard it still doesn't quite compare to Demon Souls in terms of ruthlessness. I hope that's right because I'm not enough of a glutton for punishment to bother having another crack at Demon but I want to play a game along the same vein.

At the moment I'm having another run at Deus Ex: HR. Determined to get through without setting off a single alarm and completely non-lethally as possible. Maybe I'll give Rage a bash soon too.

  • Will let you know my verdict a little later. I have never played a 3rd person RPG/slash style game before. I have only been playing on the new consoles for about 2 years. Before that I was a PC only gamer and tended to look down my nose at console gaming. About 2 years ago wanted to play something new game but did not have the money to overhaul my computer so I purchased an xbox360. Now it's all that I play on but earlier this year I purchased a new PC and I may buy Battlefield 3 for PC.

Some of my favorite games though now are 3rd person shooters. As much as I like Gears I think that Dead Space has a special place in my heart.

Will update sometime tomorrow on Dark Souls.

  • OK, I have about 4 to 5 hours with Dark Soul under my belt now for a quick review.

Graphics are great, the game is beautiful to look at. The controls are a little iffy, maybe I have not fully adjusted to it but I am getting better.

Is the game hard, YES death comes quickly and often. This is partly due the fact that they give you no hints at all. After you get fed up dying you either try something else or move on to another area of the game. It game dumps you into a central hub and does not tell you that the monsters you are going to fight can not be killed at this time a little better warning would help and perhaps not frustrate the player so much.

A full rulebook with the explanation of all the items and hints on the monsters would also help. However in playing D&D you can use your experience there to your advantage here, for example smashing weapons do better against skeletons than slashing weapons.

With the fact that you can play the game with about 10 different character classes it seems that the re-playability will be very high. I may purchase the game when it drops in price. Definitely a fun game but it can be very frustrating.

My son is a beta tester for Star Wars the Old Republic and an even hooked much deeper than I on RPGs.

what are his impressions of it? hopefully it will turn out good i really do not want to be disappointed lol

He showed me a bit of it and there are several samples on YouTube. To me the graphics and effects are great but there are several items of gameplay still weak. He also played Portals (I think) for several months and dropped it.
The joy is in the journey, not just the destination.
