- So, this past weekend was the Calgary Expo. (Only) my fifth one. I can't believe I haven't posted about previous Expo's. Although, I don't want to come across as bragging. I've been fairly fortunate to go to these and meet the people I have. I know everyone doesn't have that luxury, and I certainly don't want/mean to 'rub' it in. However, I would like to express what a great time I've had at these, and everyone I've met has been very nice! I just want to share my experiences.
So, this year was pretty special, as the Great Frank Miller was here/there. He was there for about a one-hour panel, and then signing with pics. When asked if there were any characters that he hasn't worked on, that he would like to. He said he would rather look forward towards new things, as opposed to going backwards and working on characters that have been around for awhile. Someone asked about putting out something new , or were asking about 300(I believe it was, but don't quote me on it), and he said to 'stay tuned' that something is in the works. I thought he was nice and the price I paid for the 'Frank Miller Experience' was worth it. I also met and had a good chat with Jonboy Meyers. He was really cool to talk to. As well, John Gallagher has been to the last several Expo's and I always chat with him(and buy many of his prints. I think I'm up to eleven or twelve now). John is always cool to talk to. He's always very direct and no bullsh!t. Dave McCaig is always really cool to talk to. Sheldon Beuckert is always very nice, as well. Dawn McTeigue is always very, very nice, and a sweet person! I also spent some time talking to Arthur Suydam. He was pretty easy to talk with, as well. AND Eric Zewadzki was really, really cool to talk to! I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed talking to all of them. My one regret is that I never ended up talking/meeting Jason Aaron, like I planned. I just ran out of time. Anyway, I just want to mention a couple of my faves from the past few years(otherwise I'll be typing, and you'll be reading this all night). Last year, I met my ULTIMATE FOREVER FAVORITE...THE TODDFATHER!! Todd is the best. A huge lineup(i was in line for two hours), and he shook everyone's hand, and looked everyone in the eyes when he spoke, and was just the best. He also took a selfie with everyone. I would never say 'no' to having the chance to see/meet him again. A few other past favorite(just off the top of my head), are Art Adams, Matt Kindt, Whilce Portacio, Jae Lee, Stephen Platt and many more. I really hope all of you can get the chance to meet some of these fine human beings. None of us are getting any younger. It's definitely the best time, and soooooo with it! Anyway, I apologize for the long post. Again, I just wanted to share it with you all, that are real fans of the medium. And that get 'it.' I may go to the upcoming Edmonton Expo, but it's four hours away. So, we'll see. Again, I apologize for all the babbling. Take care everyone. Happy collecting!! K

- I used to go to the Fan Expo here in Toronto a lot in the past. Haven't been in many years now. I have also met a handful of my favourite artists and writers and never had a bad moment while doing so. The line-up to meet Alex Ross (circa 2010) was super crazy. Probably spent over two hours in line for that signing. I always had an enjoyable time even if I spent a bit too much money while attending that Expo.
I'm happy to hear you had a good time as well Yoshi.Bruce McKinlay

How come you don't go anymore? Just not your thing anymore? I feel like I've missed out, so much, from previous years. I'm no 'spring chicken' anymore so I take advantage of the opportunity. I spend waaaay more than I probably should but, I enjoy it! So it's worth it. Man, over the last few years I have bought so many prints, I don't think I have enough room, lol. I'm sure the Toronto events were a good time. How was Alex Ross, btw? Did you get much of a chance to chat, or anything?

Canuck said: I met Todd McFarlane way back in 1988 at a convention in Calgary. Sounds like he hasn't changed since then. Full of passion and eager to meet his fans. I got him to sign copies of ASM Vol. #298 & #299 the first two issues of his ASM run. (#300 had not been released yet) Glad you had a good experience.
I love Todd! I wanted to try and stand out a little and ask him a non-comic book question(although I have many of those). Knowing his background and love for baseball, I asked him who he preferred while growing up, the Expos, or the Blue Jays. He said Blue Jays, all-the-way! He also said that he and some friends skipped school the Blue Jays very first game, to watch on tv, in 1977. So awesome! I really hope he comes back!
So, are you in Calgary, then? Are you aware that Another Dimension has shut down, after 42 years(I think)? I'm in Brooks and we've only had a few comic stores, over the years, that didn't last too, too long. For some time, I got my monthly comics from Another Dimension. I'm hoping John just wants to retire, or something, and not have to close the store because of low sales. Mind you, with ebay, and everyone having online store's and such, I can see the brick and mortar stores not being lucrative as they used to be. A sign of the times, I guess. Anyway, glad you had a great experience with Todd, as well!

- I think you're right. I think they are still selling online.
Is Showcase a pretty good store?

Canuck said:Yeah it's a big store. The have a lot of different things as most comic stores do. I've known the owner for a few decades. They've been working on a website, but it seems slow going - https://showcasecomics.ca/They are also on Facebook. There is another hobby store here, but they stopped carrying new release comics years ago, but they do have boxes of back issues - https://www.treasure-chest.ca/
Thank-you sir! I will check them out!
