"“I don't wear white to hide myself. I wear it so they'll see me coming. So they'll know who it ..."

Collector for the sheer passion, as comics have had such an impact on my life. 3rd time around doing so and by far the greatest experience of them all. Lover of Silver Age, but have come around to bronze and dabble in the rest.

Red Sonja Rant

I haven't written anything in blog form in awhile, and was still awake, so I figured what the hell?

Ok, last month I went on a mad search to get Red Sonja's first appearance.  After finding a good copy and some price negotiation, I was able to add it to my collection.

At the same time I was looking at Conan the Barbarian #23, I was also looking at #24.  At that time, I didn't really pay attention, but now that I am again looking around for copies of #24....i see this...and it bothers me.

Nearly every listing I see for Conan the Barbarian #24 states "first full appearance of Red Sonja".  Nope.  It isn't.

#23 had her first appearance.  Her full appearance.  In fact, she was in half of the issue.  I read the damn thing.

Anyways...a little thing that seems to have gotten under my skin.

Rant over! lol

  • As a hardcore Conan fan and collector myself, your rant had me digging into my comics in the middle of the night to make sure I wasn't crazy, and yep. . .right there on page 15 she's shouting her name! Then I checked online to see what the dealy was. I think what might be throwing you is that #24 is touted as the "First full Red Sonja STORY" on every website I see, and actually seems to be more desirable than her first appearance!

I gotta confess. . .the cover and art on #24 is a hell of a lot better (BWS doing his own inks is ALWAYS better), so I can sorta see why it gets more attention.

Either way, you've got one SWEET piece of Bronze Age Barbarity in your collection, and you can't go wrong picking up #24 also!

  • @atom HA! I completely spaced that I even wrote this haha. It was reallllllly late when I did.
Yeah, kind of a 1st appearance misconception everywhere you look.
And yes I agree, #24 cover art is really sweet, and looks far better than the prior issue. I was looking at both issues at the time I made the purchase. Glad I got the real deal lol!
