Diggin' on McFarlane

"“I don't wear white to hide myself. I wear it so they'll see me coming. So they'll know who it ..."

Collector for the sheer passion, as comics have had such an impact on my life. 3rd time around doing so and by far the greatest experience of them all. Lover of Silver Age, but have come around to bronze and dabble in the rest.

Diggin' on McFarlane

I had a bunch of comics from earlier years but hadn't been in to collecting at the start of the 90's.  I was going to college and began working at a restaurant.  Coincidentally, a new comic book shop opened in a vacant space right next to us.

When I had breaks from work, I began wandering over and checking out their stash, as well as the new releases.  Soon enough, I was back into collecting.  Image comics formed, and it was a huge deal at that time and I bought some issues.  The usual.  You know, Savage Dragon, WildCats, Spawn and so on.

I didn't totally submerge myself into Image, but bought a few issues here and there.  I think I may had purchased 3 or 4 Spawn books, and that was the most I had of any given Image title.

Fast forward to earlier this year...after picking back up collecting again the past few years.  I passed by the local comic book shop and was checking out the wall of covers.  I saw Amazing Spider-Man #312.  The cover just blew me away, with the Green Goblin/Hobgoblin battle with McFarlane's artwork.  Their copy was super pricey, but I had to find a way to get it.  I scoured the internet for a few days, and finally found a deal I could afford on a 9.6 CGC copy.

I always kind of liked McFarlane's artwork, but MAN, I did not realize just how good it was.  Sort of a late bloomer on that one.  Soon enough I was looking around at some Spawn lots for sale online.  I cut a deal on a lot with issues #1-27, and then picked up Spawn the Impaler #1-3.  Then this past weekend I went back to the comic shop and got 3 cover variants of #286.

I did read the newest issue in it's entirety and absolutely loved it.  I will definitely be going back for more...may possibly even look into getting a subscription.  I have been pacing myself in reading the 1-27 lot, but did get through 1-8 so far.

Spawn in itself is such a striking character and original creation.  Todd's artwork is out of this world.  I know he isn't new to the industry, but he has my renewed interest, and utmost respect as a fan.
