Eternals review

Neil Gaiman takes on a Classic Jack Kirby characters.

One of today’s greatest fantasy author tackles a set of characters created  by Jack Kirby.  The interesting thing about this first issue is that it takes place during the crossover event Civil War.  Some of the secondary characters are trying out to become superheros and must be registered. It dates the book and fixes it to a specific timeline with in the Marvel Comics.

So the Main characters are Mark Curry, Sersi, and Ike Harris.  All the Eternals have lost their memories, but we learn that Mark and Ike’s are beginning to return. In issue one we are introduced to the Eternals through Mark Curry’s eyes.  We are given a backstory of how three different races were created on earth by the Celestials. The humans were left alone, the Eternals were imbued with power and immortality; and finally the Deviants.  Creatures miss shaped and deadly.

We then learn that the Eternals have been helping man throughout the centuries and the Deviants have been trying subjugate everyone and thing on the planet.  Thus setting up the motivation and a question, “Who wiped the Eternals memories?” Ike Harris is attempting to gather up more of the Eternals to determine what happened for the last few years as a large portion on his memory is blank. Plus who is behind this and the bigger mystery of what to do to fix it and get his friends and family back.

The first issue is mostly setup for the overall story arc. Neil Gaiman has a fantastic way of introducing the characters and laying out the groundwork for their motivation. John

Romita Jr's art is a great complement to the story.  John has a style very reminiscent with Jack Kirby’s style.

Fantastic read for anyone who likes Neil Gaiman or for those that are fan’s of the classic Kirby and what’s to read something similar.
