If great responsibility comes with great power, what are you supposed to do with a great sense of humor?

Wow! Good week for books for me...

Like just about everyone else in the US now, I have to tighten my belt and wait for my expenses to drop or my salary to rise in order to maintain my current lifestyle.  Although beer dropped $2.50 a case, I only save that once every two weeks, so I still can't go overboard on my hobby spending.

The problem is, there are a lot of books out this week that I'd like to get. Cutting back actually hasn't been hard lately, partly because I've done a decent job of ignoring regular spandex books by the big 2 (or 5 depending on who you count), and also ignoring the acclaimed "off brand" books.  So here's my list of what I will get and what I won't.  I'd really like to hear your cries of "why are you buying that " and "how could you even think of not picking that up! It's only money!"

ASTONISHING X-MEN #25 - First Ellis Issue.  Almost definitely getting

AVENGERS INVADERS #3 - It's been good, but I could wait for it.

BATMAN #678 RIP - Getting.  Check my avatar.  I'm that guy

BOYS #20 - Dropped from my pull list.  It's been readable, but no Preacher.  Or Punisher for that matter

BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER #16 - Dropped from my pull list, but. that. hurt.

DARK TOWER END WORLD ALMANAC - HUGE Gunslinger fan, but not David's writing

DARK TOWER LONG ROAD HOME #5 - Prepaid.  See "HUGE Gunslinger fan".

DOCTOR WHO #5 I never put this on my pull list, but I had the store order the first two issues for me.  If it's there, I'll probably pick it up.  If not, I've got the videos.

FABLES #74 - Almost definitely getting.  There have been some slow moments lately, but Fabletown is at war with the Empire.  How can you not be curious about what's happening?

JACK OF FABLES #23 - Jack's so bad, he's good, but I haven't been wowed since he escaped from Mr. Revise.  The reviews sound like this issue stays on the wrong track.

TRINITY #5 - dropped a few issues.  Love Kurt Busiek, but this just doesn't click like Astro City.

SQUADRON SUPREME 2 #1 - Is JMS still writing this?  I'm on the fence.  I've liked a lot of the supremeverse stuff, but I haven't had trouble picking it up at cons cheap.

So, there we are. 12 potentials, 4 as good as definite, and everthing else on the fence.  Am I wasting money, or do I need to feed my kids a lower grade of meat to pick up a few more books this week?

  • Which 3 and for whom? I'm guessing, without looking at your collection, Batman, The Boys and Trinity.

  • Animal Man wasn't in anything, so it wasn't easy to guess. Out of the last 4 weeks, I've had 2 weeks with nothing, so this week kind of makes up for it. I remember when 12 used to be a typical week. Those were days.

  • actually, now i try to keep my books down to roughly 12 - 15 a month.
but i remember years back when i was getting every x-title that came out.
at the time there were ?-teen different x-books.
yeah, that got old real quick.

    • I haven't read an X-men book since my friend got back from Turkey. I was buying books for him while he was over there for army duty. Can't say I miss the X-men much.

  • Well out of that list, I'm just getting Batman.

I'm working on Fables in TPB form, so will have a long time to go before getting to more recent stories. Kind of tempted by Astonishing X-Men, but once again will probably go for TPB once I read reviews.

    • In hindsight, I should have gotten fables and Y in trades. They got expensive. Astonishing under Whedon was good, but Cassaday had a lot to do with that. Ellis and Bianchi are an interesting combination. I don't expect to stick with it for too long.

  • Let's see, ended up with Squadron Supreme, Batman, The Dark Tower Almanac (kind of surprises me), Jack of Fables (surprised again), Fables and the Dark Tower. I kind of cheated on my limit of 5 since I already paid for the Dark Tower. Now I'm off to see which were worth it.
