"How fares my Juliet? that I ask again; For nothing can be ill, if she be well."

If great responsibility comes with great power, what are you supposed to do with a great sense of humor?

The Things I Do for Money

Hey all, since I can't seem to organize the comic book related blog entries I've got floating in my head, I thought I'd give you a brief glimpse into what I do, which is bridge engineering. In my last job, I was kind of specialized in design for 4 years, then construction inspection for 3. In my new job, I've done everything but forensic engineering (think: why did that bridge fall down?), and I enjoy all of it. Yesterday, I got to get up at 3am to inspect a deck pour.

The bridge is about 130' long and 60' wide, including a 14' wide pedestrian walkway. Here are some pics.

Basically, the only thing I'm geekier about than comics is bridges. I'm not the most knowledgable person in the world, but I'm fortunate enough to love what I do. Not everyone can see what's going on at those construction sites you drive past, so I'm sharing. Enjoy!

  • How do they get the concrete to stay?

I mean They just put in a new bridge on the way home and when you drive under it you can see the sky. So do they lay metal on top of the trusses or do they do something else?

  • Sometimes they use galvanized steel, like if the forms are going to be difficult to remove over a highway or train yard. Most of the time they use plywood so it can be reused, it's lighter and they can inspect the underside of the deck periodically. If you see a lot of extra hardware hanging on, they'll probably use plywood.

    • I used to be a morning person. Now it's impossible to get up unless someone is depending on me. I still enjoy being up at that time, I just have a hard time getting out of bed. I can get a lot done between 3am and 5am.

  • haha, i used to have to get up at 3am to go to work...not fun....now, if i got up that early, i would probably sit on my bed staring at the wall for 2 hours before i realize i am supposed to be moving about
