A few weeks ago I purchased "The Sandman Omnibus, Volume 1" as an Easter gift for my son, Christopher (who turned nineteen in December).
After I gave him the book I kept seeing it laying around here and there and kept telling him to read it because I was pretty sure he would love the book.
I knew that he was finishing up his semester so I didn't want to push it too much but I also know of his tendency to let things ago. I did tell him that if he wasn't going to read it to give it to me and that I would read it (as this would be easieer than having to locate my copies).
Last week I was looking for some missing shoes in his closet and, looking up, I saw the book just sitting there. Now, once it is in his closet, I know that it could disappear for months or even years. I grabbed it and took it to the family room so that I could start reading it.
However, that night I noticed that it was gone from where I had left it. I didn't give it another thought until that night when I went into his room to say goodnight. There he sat, cross-legged in bed, the book open in his lap. I was surprised to see him reading the book but I was even more surprised to see that he was just about half way through the book (if you've seen it, you know that it is a pretty large book).
He looked up and told me that he couldn't believe how good the book was. I laughed and told him that yes, I knew.
I constantly try to share all of my passions with my sons (books, movies, music, etc.) and it always feels great to see them when they "get" it. He finished the book two days later and I now have Volume 2 sitting behind me here at work. I guess he has a few days of reading now...
