Had a small collection from my youth, but dove back in head first June 2018. Now going after the entire Hulk legacy run (among others).

I don’t remember exactly what my first comic book was. I do know that some of my earliest books were masterpieces like Blue Beetle and Son of Ambush Bug. Not exactly classics, but those books got me hooked on a brand new hobby.

i couldn’t get enough. As soon as I had a couple of bucks in my pocket, I headed to the mall, Paper Tiger usually, and grabbed up whatever I could. This was the mid 80s, and I was in my early teens. My town would eventually get a comic book shop, but that hadn’t happened yet, so off to the bookstore I went. Every time, it felt like there was a new title I should grab, and pretty soon it led to what I can only assume happens to a lot of kids that age...insufficient funds!

I started selling off items to my friends, just to keep up my “habit”. Selling things I never should have sold! G.I. Joe and Transformer toys, and even some of my *gasp* comics! It had become a monster that was consuming its own tail! I couldn’t keep this up! But being a teenager with a self assessed IQ of 752, I knew what was best, and just kept the train rolling. Before I knew it, my collection had been picked over by my friends, and I was left with the scraps. That was a bit disheartening, and my love of comics started to wane.

After a while, my attention was turned in a different direction...you guessed it, girls. Oh, I still picked up a few books here and there. Jumped on the early Image bandwagon even. But I wasn’t as die hard into it as I had been 10 years prior.

After a while, I met the woman that would eventually become my wife, got married, had a couple kids, and got busy with working and raising a family. The single long box had been tucked in my closet decades ago, and forgotten about. I hadn’t purchased or read a comic book in 25 years. That is until about 2 months ago, when I dusted off the box, pulled out a few books, and out of curiosity, hit the internet. Then I found The Realm...

Stay tuned for part 2!

  • Boy have you missed a lot of stuff in the past 25 years lol! Like you, I fell in love with comics as a teenager in the 80s. There were so many great titles back then. I'm also an unabashed fan of Ambush Bug and finally picked up a copy of his first appearance just this week! I'm excited to hear about what gems you managed to hold onto for all these years. Welcome to the Realm.

    • Thanks mekdinosaur, it's good to be back in the mix. I'm really enjoying filling in some of the holes that were left, and picking up some of the new books as well.

  • I can tell this is going to be a fun read, even before getting to the next parts. I had to laugh at the "masterpieces" you had mentioned, remembering my big run of Blue Devil and Firestorm back then haha.
Being a kid not old enough to hold a job definitely made things hard. I ended up pulling around a lawn mower and a big can of gas around the neighborhoods looking for anyone whose grass was high. I ended up doing 4 or 5 a weekend at 10 bucks a pop and spent the majority on comics then. Some went to card collecting then too.

    • Thanks Spector, I really don't write much, but this was a fun exercise. Can't just pull the lawn mower around these days, now you need to be bonded and insured...so stupid.
