""Old soldiers never die. They just fade away"."

Retired soldier, having the time of his life ressurrecting a childhood hobby.

February 2023

The first Ironman of hopefully many.

Sitting down and staring at my long box with 25 books in it. Realizing that I have such a long way to go to be anywhere I want to be in this hobby. I went out yesterday, and bought 2 long boxes, and some boards and bags for the bounty awaiting me. I started receiving first shipments of books.  Nothing at all very special. I did nab an Iron Man #3, which I thought was better than what the seller graded it for. Happy just staring at the near empty Long box though.  I do love to read them, but hunting them down is good fun also.

1st lesson learned: Put the board in the bag first, moron, as not to possibly damage the book.

2nd lesson learned: Online bidding is not a competitive sport. You can't yell "In your face", to the bidder you just snipped on Ebay, for a book that you know you dont really want. Bid a price, put a max on it, and let the chips fall where they may.

3rd lesson learned: Just because you can afford some higher comics, doesn't mean that you should bid on them. I was Luke warm on a book (it was a cgc 9.8, first appearance, signed by the artist). I just really wanted this collection to start with a bang. Well, I was probably screaming more joyfully, than the person who sniped it at the end. I would have been ok with owning the book. But I wish to be really happy for a comic I'm going to shell out 400+ dollars for.

4th Lesson: Ebay is not the only place to buy boxes. Went to my local dealer to get boxes and supplies. Good guy , starting to establish a relationship of what I'm looking for. Although I realize I have to patronize his store.

5th Lesson: Read these forums!!!Spa-fon gave some wise advice about collecting and I agreed wholeheartedly with it. Will be modeling my collection on the sound advice he gave.

6th and final lesson learned this week: Patience, Patience, Patience. The books that I want I will run across at the right time, right place, and most assuredly the right price. I'm chasing one big "fish" now , and hopefully I'll land it

In parting my techically challenged self will try to post pics of Ironman #3. (Hey I only have 25 and want to show something).

  • I've always found it good to put the board halfway down the bag first, the use the board to guide the comic in....

  • I think you will be chronicaling a pretty rare senerio. A collection from the start isn't something you read about often. Very cool. Good luck, and happy hunting.
