Programmer by day, comic nerd by night. My official job title is "Director of Janitorial Engineering"
So in the middle of creating the new site and moving everything over I had to break down and buy a new computer.
I didn't realize how old my current computer was. It started making noises, randomly shutting down, and breathing fire (ok...not that bad...but it was pretty bad).
I tried to talk my boss at work that my employer should by me one as I can work from home but that went over like a ton of bricks.
I researched and had it narrowed down to 2 manufacturers. Dell and HP. Both were about the same price, but HP's included 8GB RAM. I know you are thinking 8GB RAM!? How can someone use that much. Well...I run a lot of Adobe products which tend to eat up memory pretty quick.
In the end though I went with a Dell deal. It didn't have 8GB RAM, just 4GB, but it did include a 24" digital flat panel monitor. 24"! When it arrived I thought about putting this in my bathroom it is that pretty. It is really nice because of the resolution (1900x1200) I can essentially get 2 pages up on the screen at one time. Plus the graphics card has another digital slot so I can use my already existing 19" digital monitor. Now I will be able to have 3 screens at one time. (On I side note I noticed that on the business vostro computer you could get upto 4 monitors on it...one day...one day).
Currently my office is a nightmare though. I have both computers "guts" exposed while I try to transfer files, etc. I also noticed on the new machine that BIOS shows the 4GB of RAM, but when Vista starts up it only shows 3GB. After doing some research it appears that Vista 32 bit can only use 3GB of RAM, whereas the 64 bit version can use up to 8GB of RAM.
I chatted with Dell's technical support and they are sending me out a 64 bit version of Vista Ultimate. I won't install it right away...I will wait until later on when most if not all of the drivers are in place. But it was a pleasent and easy conversation.
Anyways...yea for new computer!
