Loved comics since i was a kid, but it has only been until now that i could really pursue collecting as a hobby. I call myself a cover art collector. If i love the art of a cover i will buy it. Greg Horn, AH, and Campbell are my faves right now.

Price Gouging on Variants

4934 views • Jul 1, '10 • (12) Comments

Okay so i know this is going to go both ways by point of view but i think this is ridiculous.  I have tried in the past to buy variants and after today i remember why i stopped.  Lets use an example.  Wonder Woman 600 was released today and i attempted to buy the variant.  The cover price says 4.99 and the shop wants to charge me twenty dollars!  They claim its because of how many they have to order.  So if they are buying it for 5 dollars and charging me 20 then isnt that price gouging?  Are the stores being charged higher for the variants by the distributor?  This is idiotic!  I am not paying 15 more dollars for a cover that has the same comic inside it.  If this a nationwide practice then all the comic publishers need to print 20 dollars on these variants and not the 4.99 that was on the comic i saw today.

Our economy is never going to recover because we have a habit towards idiocracy.  The consumer has an easy choice to choose what comic to buy.  Half the reason i feel that the prices on comics gets higher and higher is because of the extra cost to print these variants alongside the other thousands and then only a fraction of us have the pockets or desire to buy at that outrageous price.

  • If you search the forums you will see several topics on it. Basically they don't pay for the variants. They are incentives to order more comics. Take your example for instance. Lets assume this variant is a 1:20 ratio. Typically shops will sell it for $20.

Lets assume this shop always orders 20 Wonder Woman comics and they get the 35% discount. So they spend $3.25 per comic for a total of $65. They normally get to sell these for $4.99 each for a total of $100. Thus they have profited $35. Now they get this free comic they sell for $20. They normally had to sell 13 comics to break even (all things being equal). Now because of this variant they only need to sell 9 comics to break even ($65 - $20 / $4.99).

Well I mentioned before they normally sell 20 comics. If they double their order to 40 and they sell their 2 variants for $20 each, they now only need to sell 18 comics to break even...but they have an additional 20 comics that are just "gravy". This is the ultimate problem with variants. It encourages stores to order more than they need to which essentially floods the back issue market making these books "worthless".

  • I hate variants, I think it's a BS way to make you spend your money. Sure sometimes you get cool art work but it's not worth the extra $15 . My comic shop does a random drawing each week and offers the variants at cover price, I'll buy them then but in the end I just care about the story and the art working togeather. I'm not looking to get rich on my comics I just enjoy the search, looking for deals and completting runs. Comic shops have a right to make a profit, but it sucks when you have to spend the same amount of money for one comic as you would on 4 or 5.

  • i hear you there, iceman. For me i like collecting the artwork. However, not at such dumb prices. If i have alot of a run i will look to complete it but i often like to collect artwork on covers by certain artists, such as Adam Hughes or Greg Horn.

  • The shop I go to sells their variants between 15-$20.00 depending on the variant but right now, Ive been picking them up for 5-$10.00.It just ALL depends on where you go to get your books & also WHO you KNOW as well. The Shop I go to is called Bonanza Books & Comics. They are 1 of 4 of the OLDEST comic shops in the country.

  • I totally understand what you are saying Doughboy! I am sure you are not defending the practice but just laying down the biz. I still think its tasteless to do that out the gate for a "cover." If the book had more content and exclusive artwork not seen anywhere else then i would most certainly see eye to eye with it. To go along with ComixGuru, i just found some variants today for hecka cheap. I am sure compared to what shops charged for them out the gate, i landed a steel. I am not a run collector, but more of a comic book art collector. My favorite artists are AH and Greg Horn. One day i will have to "pay" for some of their past rare variants and i am ready and willing to do so. However, nobody gets to take my money on release day! Not when there is better artwork on other issues. (The Batgirl 12 artwork is awesome by the way!)

  • yup, but i like everyone here, we have to find a way to get those personal favorites that dont cost that arm and a leg. I found a new store that knows what they have but wont charge you crazy prices for them.
