Punisher Mini Series

I started watching the Netflix Punisher series a couple of weeks back and I am really enjoying it!  I would say this is my favorite Marvel run on Netflix to date.

When I started collecting comics, Punisher was my go-to.  I liked him because he didn't have super powers- just an angry bad- guy that was always seeking vengeance.  He had no qualms about wasting low-lifes and stealing their money to advance his vendetta.  He wasn't always trying to do the right thing like most super heroes, but his mission was compelling and interesting to watch- a guy that would employ violence and terror to fight crime is pretty wild!  Knowing that he was a mortal human also added to his appeal- this guy could actually die if he screwed up.  The story is much more interesting IMHO.

Watching the show got me sifting through my Punisher collection and I realized that my favorite vigilante of all time barely exists in my collection.... I used to have an almost complete run of the first 100 in the vol 1 series, but those all disappeared years ago.  I figured it was time to start building the collection again- other than ASM 129, Punisher comics are relatively cheap and accessible!

I decided to start with the Mini Series that was published prior to vol 1- when I was a kid, these were the issues I could never get my hands on!  No one had them, and, if they did, they wanted tons of money for them- $20 for one comic when I was a kid seemed like a waste (it was all about quantity vs. quality back then).

Yesterday, I received #4 in the mail, completing the mini series for me!  These books arent the most valuable, but these were always coveted by me as a collector and I am very happy to finally own the series!

Now it is time to start sifting the dollar bins for vol 1 issues!

  • Punisher is also my favorite character for many of the same reasons. A lot of people say he's a one-note character, but that's why he's so great in the hands of a good writer, because he's a CHALLENGE to get right. When Punisher stories are done right, they're great. . .but in the wrong hands, some of the all-time WORST stories are Punisher stories.

    • As far as cinematic universe goes, what are your thoughts on all of the Punisher movies? I always enjoyed them, but they were not great movies IMO.... I think the series blows them all away!

  • Punisher was my very first comic that I collected. I started with the larger size Punisher Magazine and then kept collecting the rest; war journal, war zone, armory. Daredevil and Wolverine were also a few of my favorites. I pareticularly liked the Fall from Grace storyline in the Daredevil series.

    • I never read the magazine series- and I never actually see them for sale anywhere! I think I will be on the lookout for these now!

  • Garth Ennis wrote some of the most hard hitting Punisher Stories under the Marvel Max Imprint.
