Going to Give CBCS a Try!

These are the books I am sending in- let's hope for 9's!!!

Not too long ago, I stopped by a local shop type store and found a collection of G.I. Joe comics sitting in a brown cardboard box.  They were all in old poly bags and seemed to have been decently taken care of.  I got talking to the shop owner and he told me that they came in as part of an estate auction and that he wanted $40 for the box.  I sifted through the collection and, at the bottom of the box, i came across two CGC graded books - a #1 and a #21.  I knew that getting books graded was not cheap, so I figured $40 for the box (which actually had a complete run of 1-100, with additional unslabbed copies of 1 and 21) was a good price.

I had never given much thought to getting books slabbed- up to this point, I have always been a fan of comics for reading.  But now that I have multiple copies of books and I have digital access to much of anything, I am starting to think it would be nice to get some books graded.  Partly so I can see how far off I am in my guesses of grading, partly to protect some of my investments.

After collecting for a bunch of years, I think I finally have some books worth grading.  I watched a lot of videos and searched around the web to determine if one company is better than another, and to weigh the cost.  The whole culture of grading is pretty new to me and I figured I should do it right- and I had no idea there were so many opinions about grading.

I finally determined that I am going to try out CBCS- their slabs look nice, they get high marks for grading accuracy, their price is fair, and they offer some cool services you can't get elsewhere.  They now press books (which includes dry cleaning), they verify signatures, they offer raw grading.  All cool things that I want to try out eventually!

My first pile to send in will consist of the following:

- Amazing Spider-Man 300

- Fantastic Four 45

- Preacher 1 (double signature)

- Incredible Hulk 271

-Shazam! 28

The signature verification on Preacher 1 is going to set me back $40, and the Fantastic Four is old enough that the pricing goes from $18 to $34.  Total, it is going to cost me almost $200 to get these slabbed.

As a collector, I am very excited to get these encapsulated.  As a cheapskate, I am thinking of how many collections I could buy for $200.  I guess this will be my gift to me for the holidays!!  Some time next year, I will know if these books grade as well as I thought they would- I feel like all but the Fantastic Four 45 should grade close to a 9-9.something...

Anyone out there have any thoughts on slabbing?

  • CBCS is just as good as CGC. In Canada they might be bigger, due to their successful marketing up here. CBCS is usually at the comic conventions in Canada, so it very convenient.

    • I will try hitting up a con over the border at some point, and when I do, I will make sure to bring some stuff with me!!

  • The first comic book I bought online had a signature and the only verification(which really wasn'T a verification) was a photo copy of the Comic con with the artist's name that signed highlighted.

But I too have been thinking of CBG with a few of my comics, X-files,TMNT and maybe akira. But I wrestle with the factors between good reading books and good looking. Yes there are many good cover art work now compared with the 90's. So how does one decide?
