  • Other than "Grade my comic", not seeing a lot of new threads, so...
Would you buy a cgcified (yes, that's now a word) comic that had a scratch on the slab? If it had a pen mark on the slab? If it was scuffed? If it had a signature with no COA but was still graded?
Actually, there are 2 questions here: 1) Does the condition of the slab affect the value of the comic? 2) Would you buy it if it didn't affect the value, since many buy slabs for display, not just preservation?

  • I am not worried about the case as long as the damage does not hurt the comic inside. You can get a new case fairly cheap.

I would not buy a cgc'd comic that has a signature without being signature series.

But, unless I'm mistaken, you can't just switch out the case for a new one. Wouldn't you have to have it regraded, essentially buying a new case?
The reason I ask is because I've seen all these things just this past week. I've seen great deals with no bids and I'm wondering if others are as hesitant as I am about the value.

  • You can have the book reholdered. All they do is take off the outer case and reslab it and mail it back to you. There is not any regrading involved.

    It costs $12 plus shipping.

I believe the slabbed comic cannot have the seal broken otherwise the grade is invalidated. Only CGC can break the seal and reholder it. If the seal if broken when returned to CGC then it must be regraded.

  • I don't buy CGC books. If I did, and the damage on the slab didn't affect the book or the seal, I'd be ok with it.
If there was a cgc book for say $100 with a scratched case (no damage to seal or book) and the same book, same grade with a mint case for $150, which would you buy?

I'm buying the $100 book and getting it reslabbed by CGC for $12.

No-brainer. CGC case is just a case. I've bought a couple of CGC books with cracked cases.

  • Just as long as no damage to the book, reslab is the best option. I had a packaged damaged in shipment, bottom of case was busted. Unfortunately there was a very slight bend in the corner of the book so CGC would only regrade it, at full cost, and lower the grade. Sounds like just a scratch so no damage to book, reholder it.
The joy is in the journey, not just the destination.

don't forget shipping and insurance costs. depending on where you are this could easily cost you more than the $38 difference

  • That could be true. I guess I was just focusing on the book by itself and not the extra expenses that could be involved. , you could just throw it in a bag and board for nothing if you're not too picky. I mean you already know the grade. Again this is an opinion from a non CGC person,
