  • Abysslord sent me a PM because of a posting on another thread asking me what Indie titles I read (I had said, off the top of my head that I read about 40). Well, I may order about 40 in any given month, but it turns out I read quite a few more (given there are lots of minis, more delays with Indie publishers, not every book comes out monthly, etc.)

When I researched it I had QUITE A FEW more than 40 and figured I'd share it here so that others can talk about their favorite Indie (e.g. NOT Marvel or DC) publishers and titles (Vertigo counts as DC, Icon & Soleil count as Marvel)

NOTE: This list can include books that I have pre-ordered but may not have come out yet.

Anyway, I get a BUNCH. Comics-aholics Anonymous, anyone? "Hi, I'm Bob and I read comics....."

  • Well - Currently I'm not actively collecting as such, but titles/publishers that I enjoy reading when I buy TPBs or comics:

    Transformers (IDW)
    Mouse Guard (Archaia)
    Bone (Cartoon Books/Scholastic)
    Usagi Yojimbo (Dark Horse)
    Hellboy / BPRD (Dark Horse)
    Soulfire (Aspen)

I'm also into Top Cow, but haven't read that much of theirs (a few Witchblades, Fathom and Cyberforce)
    Currently Reading:
Graphic Novels: Nightwing (90s series), Lumberjanes
    Regular Novels: Chronicles of Prydain

I'd recommend you check out the Artifacts series (probably in TPB). This series ties together all the Top Cow universe books. Things like the Witchblade, The Darkness, the Spear of Destiny wielded by The Magdalena.

Some good info on it here:
    http://www.comicvine.com/the-13-artifacts/12-55685/

You can also listen to me talking to Ron Marz about the Artifacts series here:

(This episode also has me talking to Jimmy Palmiotti about the GREAT "Time Bomb" series from Radical with art by the incomparable Paul Gulacy....)

Your Boom! & Walking Dead will be reliably out in trade, I'd guess, so you'll be able to continue those with no problem. HOWEVER, for really small circulation Indies (esp. from companies like Big Dog) if you don't support the single issues, it's unlikely they will survive to give you the TPB collections you crave.
You should be OK on Morning Glories, it's selling >10k right now. For lower circulation titles from Image, there is not a guarantee of a trade if they sell too poorly.

There will always be plenty of people getting Marvel/DC books, waiting for the trade there on most titles is a viable option. It's a really chancy one for small-end Indies.

  • Thanks for putting the list up, good you collect a lot of comics. I would think there's no way you can read all that except I juggle just as much between novels and comics and tv shows and movies, so I guess it's possible to keep track of all those storylines Smile

Here are my indie titles, all read and all issues, I don't like TPB.

    Boys [Dynamite]
    Carbon Grey [Image]
    Crossed: Family Values [Avatar]
    Crossed: Psychopath [Avatar]
    Daomu [Image]
    George RR Martin's Doorways [IDW]
Hack / Slash [DDP and now Image]
Hack / Slash: Me Without You [Image]
    Halcyon [Image]
    Haunt [Image]
    Incorruptible [BOOM]
    Infinite Vacation [Image]
    Irredeemable [BOOM]
    Jennifer Blood [Dynamite]
Locke & Key: Keys to the Kingdom [IDW]
    Memoir [Image]
    Morning Glories [Image]
Rat Bastards [ Image, I may only get a few to see what it's like]
Ruse [collecting all the crossgen issues now, even technically the future is marvel I still list it here]
    Skullkickers [Image]
    Stan Lee's Soldier Zero [BOOM]
    Stan Lee's Starborn [BOOM]
    Stan Lee's The Traveler [BOOM]
    Walking Dead [Image]

I just got back into comics 6 months ago and when i collected earlier I only read Spider-Man. I never knew comics were so diverse, I only ever saw DC/Marvel/Image and back then it was pretty much all superhero stuff. I got out of comics a few years after Image formed and all the superhero groups and deaths and foil covers ... blah. So it's refreshing to read all these titles that aren't the ordinary superhero story. I found all these just by doing stuff like "Hey, Irredeemable sounds good ..... then 'hey it IS good, what else has Waid done?" etc. That's led me all the way here and I'm still looking.

Btw, Crossed is a must read for any Walking Dead fan. I think the first mini-series is one of the best things I've read, novel or comics, period.

The current "Night of the Living Dead" stuff from Avatar is surprisingly good too..... (For people who like that sort of thing.....but if you like Crossed, I'm guessing you'd like NotLD also).

  • Kudos to all of you for being able to keep up with so many titles. I have a pretty good job but I'm sure my wife would leave me if my comic book budget were that big. Just a couple of Indies if you can call them that.

G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero
    True Blood

You took the words right out of my mouth.

Bone [Cartoon Books] Every once in a while something new pops up.
Captain Swing [Image] Forgot about this one because the last issue was so long ago.
Four Eyes [Image] I saw some new pages for #5 on Fiumara's blog... FINALLY!
Locke & Key [IDW] Easily my favorite and most consistently good comic!
    Rasl [Cartoon Books]
    Traveler [Boom!]

Nothing at all like Bone, but it's very good. About a dimension-hopping art thief who steals parallel dimension versions of famous paintings to sell cross-dimensionally. (Did I use the word "dimension" enough?)

He's being pursued by a mysterious figure in an interesting underlying story thread that has not yet resolved.

This is a good book to read in TPB, since the regular issues are infrequent. Jeff Smith has said the entire series should wrap up in the 2012-2013 timeframe.

I'm interested in getting into Morning Glories because it has gotten pretty good reviews. I also want to pick up Hack/Slash next month when it becomes a monthly title. It sounds like something I'd be into. Anyone read the previous Hack/Slash minis that have come out over the past few years, and are they any good?

  • Hey BOB.

I wanted to ask.. I notice you had Pinpoint on your list from Big Dog Ink.. I just ordered that same comic.. being the cover was so awesome.. And read some good reviews on it.. Have you heard anything about it or seen some pages?

I'll to pick that omnibus up if those issues are in there, that's all I have left to read.

Amazon says Vol, 3 has thru issue #34, but I just sent an e-mail to Tim Seeley to ask him if that Omnibus will be the only place to get those otherwise unpublished (by Devil's Due) issues. I'll post here & let you know when Tim responds.

  • Thanks. I think people listing the book for sale were saying it has #1-32, and I think something else said that. So that's why I was confused. Good to hear straight from Tim himself.

Pretty sure those are in Omnibus v.2

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hack/Slash

There's a chart on the bottom, and this lists issues 33 and 34 as in the omnibus, so I guess they're in there. Maybe the times I saw it as only up to #32 was because the people weren't aware or something.

    Usagi Yojimbo (Dark Horse)
    Green Hornet (Dynamite)
    Chew (Image)
    Walking Dead (Image)
    Groo (Dark Horse)

and... can anyone guess the last?

    Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (Mirage)
    Tales of the TMNT (Mirage)

This is of course assuming Mirage puts out the odd issue here and there as they say they will.

Thanks guys. I'll definitely be picking up the new issue 1 in a few weeks, and if I really get into it I'll go back through the Omnibus. From the early previews I've read the upcoming new series is supposed to be a good jumping on point for new readers.

  • I read the first trade for Chew, and I'm in love. It's great! I've since added it to my pull list.

This spring I'm going to try out Daomu.

There's a chart on the bottom, and this lists issues 33 and 34 as in the omnibus, so I guess they're in there. Maybe the times I saw it as only up to #32 was because the people weren't aware or something.

OK, I got the scoop from Tim Seeley.

The material that was originally slated for Devil's Due #33/34 was published by Image in the Annual (subtitled "Murder Messiah") that came out last October. These issues are NOT in the v3 Omnibus, but will be in Omnibus v4 when it eventually comes out.

so, if you want those issues that bridge the DDP series to the current ongoing Image series, look for that Murder Messiah annual.

  • Ok cool, already got that then. Thanks for checking that out.

And I've just added Abattoir thanks to looking at your list. Do you have some site where you see all these upcoming independent titles so you can start them from issue #1? I'm playing catch up a lot of the time, although it's usually only a couple of issues. But still, it'd be nice to know about these things ahead of time.

I just look at the solicits as they come out every month. All are in the Previews catalog. Many are posted in a variety of places on the internet, I tend to consolidate all the solicits each month as I find them in a "stickied" post over on the ComicBookPage web-site forums.

We also do a Previews podcast every month where we'll try to give a heads up on new/interesting stuff. That is done while the books are still orderable by your local shop, so you get a good lead time on them.

I'm also into Top Cow, but haven't read that much of theirs (a few Witchblades, Fathom and Cyberforce)

I ll try the artifacts series thx....I've read some of the modern comics, I find they lack good content in their stories...I will be glad to read something that has good feed back ......I very much like reading horror, war, ripleys believe it or not, and comics related to these gene's....thanks for the info Shocked

  • I will say, if you are not checking anything out from BIG DOG INK, you are missing out a definite worthy replacement for the big 2.

  • Rat Queens is easily my favorite book right now, followed by Saga.

IDW is doing great things with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Judge Dredd. Also digging Megaman and Sonic the Hedgehog from Archie (these are actually surprisingly good).

Valiant is also great, but I wished they hadnt cancelled Archer and Armstrong and Harbringers, as I was enjoying those immensely.

  • Too many to count. I get 91 titles and basically only about 6-7 are from Marvel/DC.

BOOM and Image are knocking titles out right now, really good stuff.

  • So many good titles from Image. My favourites are Saga, Rat Queens, East of West and man, am I ever excited for Brian K Vaughn's new one We Stand on Guard.

Rachel Rising probably is my #1 read right now though.

  • Personally...I believe Image is big enough to not be considered an indie publisher anymore.
    I'm not saying....I'm just saying...

  • Not sure if Image _really_ counts any more, but I like Saga and Low.

Also, Rat Queens should be picked up. It is super good and fun.

  • Just got back into comics after a 20 year break. Checked out some Image titles. Birthright, Outcast, Drifter and Autumnlands Tooth and Claw and just couldn't find that spark from my youth.

I stumbled on Death Sentence London from Titan Comics and am in love with comics all over again. The setting, characters, artwork and story are amazing.

I was fortunate enough to meet the creator Montynero at Oz Comic Con and he was so down to earth and passionate about the series.

  • after completely dropping the big 2 (dc and marvel), i'm looking to try some indy books. right now i'm going with critter from BIG DOG INK, barb wire from dark horse and Klaus from boom!.

I will say, BIG DOG INK has something for everyone. if you have not tried anything from them, you should.

There was a series before that, just called Death Sentence which was pretty good as well. I have the first few singles. I think there were only 6 issues? It might be worth looking for that in a trade.

I would take a look at Y: The Last Man (trades), Saga (trades and is super awesome), and Criminals (trade and do not let the name fool you). I have enjoyed the current runs of Ms. Marvel and Moon Knight, though they are certainly not Indy. Trades for those as well.

    Welcome back to comics Smile

  • Big Dog Ink has merged with Aspen Comics. All future comics will be published under the Aspen banner. They haven't had anything new in about a year now, and the original Shahrazad and Critters series is currently being re-printed under the Aspen banner. Talking to Tom Hutchinson at the Las Vegas Amazing! Comic Con, the creator of Big Dog Ink, he said that new issues of Ursa Minor, Penny For Your Soul, Legend Of Oz, etc. will be coming soon.

That book is super fun, and I absolutely recommend it as well. Meg Dejmal was a barrista for a while at the coffee shop connected to my LCS. She was a writer on the first issue (at least) and the model base for Hannah. I picked the book up because she was cool, then stayed with it because the book is great Smile

Actually, I was thinking about mentioning JL, but it is only 3 issues and 1 million variants. I wonder about Jupiter's Circle, but I really liked JL. Black Science is a really good choice. I forgot about that. I have the first several singles, but opted to go to TPB for the rest. It is just better to read in a chunk. I only got through the first 3 Letter 44, but though it had promise. Nice to hear it kept up!

  • I'm probably in the minority here, but I actually don't care for Black Science all that much. I think there were too many characters right off the bat, and reading them in singles they never differentiated themselves enough for me. THat book seriously needs a recap page. Maybe it reads better in trade though.

I much prefer Deadly Class for my monthly Remender fix. THat book is insane, but awesome.

I have not read Deadly Class, but I do think Black Science is really interesting. There are a lot of characters, but I was just in so maybe I am biased Smile Having said that, TPB is a great way to read the book. Definitely helps.

Like Black Science. Agree that it's very interesting and also very entertaining, and remains on my reading list, month after month. And, as Tex said, Deadly class is insane and awesome. Also, a great read month after month!
