Author CGC is it worth it?

I've been seeing more and more CGC graded comics on ebay and some of the back issue sites. Last I checked, it took pretty good amount of cash to get books graded, but some very new comics were graded and slabbed. It seems like too much of a gamble to get newer issues graded. There's no guarantee that the title will be worth it. Kind of seems like wasting cash I could be spending on building up my collection, but that's just me.

The problem with CGC is once you start collecting them, you can't stop and you want to get your whole collection graded.

I guess it depends on what it is you want. I personally don't have any graded comics but I have considered it. I saw a rule somewhere, I think it was here on MCP. The person stated that he would only get something graded that he thought was a 9.4 or better and worth more than 100 dollars. I am not sure I am totally correct but I think it sounds like a good way of doing it.

yeah i have a bunch of cgc stuff but only the key issues are graded. modern issues arent that expensive to grade at like $16.00 per comic, but it gets expensive when you also factor in shipping too. i'd only cgc it if youre thinking of selling some of your top end comics. a lot of people pay triple the actual value for cgc stuff, its ridiculous.

Does anyone know how to comics CGC'd if you live in Canada? Aside from sending it to the US...

I would imagine that you would need to probably visit them at a convention if the go (not sure why they wouldn't go to Toronto or something).

Maybe you could save up all that you wanted graded and send at that time?

Here is the link to their site with "authorized dealers". I think you can submit through them.

i dont mind bidding on CGC book on ebay because then you know the grade, but i dont tend to pay or bid extra either. i just pick up dell 9.6 SILVER (lone ranger horse) #30 for 60 buck. it is the highest one in the census. it list 9.2 for 60. but i wouldnt have gone past 70. Just waiting for the mail to arrive. i have a couple other CGC books one of which i got in the MCP auction last year. i dont think i would slab any of my personal collection. as i dont trust the mail and getting over the border and back.

I collected about a thousand modern books in the 1980's and bagged and boarded most without ever opening them. I pulled them out this past year and started to do a little research. I found a subscription service called GPA. They track all sales of CGC books on ebay and most other popular auction sites. I would suggest that anyone interested in collecting or selling CGC books invest in a membership to GPA. CGC also has a pre-screening service that helps to keep you from grading(and paying ful price) for books that won't grade high enough to make it worth your investment. The old saying about "it takes money to make money" is very true. In my opinion, most serious investors want a book that a professional grader has graded. I have also been amazed at how much some collectors are willing to pay for high graded(9.6-10) books.
In short, yes it is worth CGC grading but be selective about what you send in.
