Correction. The '80's (Venom) cover is hotter than the '60's cover. The Red cover does seem to still be outpacing all the other covers, though.

These seem to be gaining steam, especially the '70's (Red cover). That, and the '60's (Yellow cover) seem to be the most popular of the 5. I'm partial to the '60's cover myself.

At first I just picked up the yellow, red and blue ones but then I broke down and got the other two (plus the regular cover). With the Fan Expo one I picked up too it was a very expensive month for Spider-Man.

I think the 80's one is sharper than the rest. I like them all though. I have all except the expo cover. Waiting for the right price at the right time. I noticed on previewsworld that there is a 692 2nd print coming out in october. I also noticed the decades variants coming out again in october as well? Is this a typo or a 2nd print set? Anyone know what's up?

I picked up all the covers. Wasn't too impressed with the Marcos Martin ones. Really liked the Fan Expo cover!

I started with the Venom cover, then the next week I bought the Gwen Cover...
a week later I went ahead and bought the rest. I think im gonna do a custom frame job on the decade covers and hang em on the wall in the guest bedroom. |

I could be wrong but I believe they're being released as a complete set. I spoke to the owner at my LCS and he indicated he sold out of the decades variants he had but he ordered a couple complete sets. I'm assuming that's what they are referring to. I thought that they were originally released as a complete set? In a thread prior to it's release, people were questioning why their lcs were breaking up the set and selling them individually. My lcs sold them as sets, as this is how they were ordered and how they were received. And if it is being offered again in Previews, which I am hoping that's not true or a mistake, Marvel saw how much in demand these are and how easy it is for them to make more money off them....

In that case, I am thinking the latter. First print re-orders for more $$$$. |

Yeah...so now instead of just having a 2nd printing of a comic, we have a 2nd printing of a pack of comics...

if marvel starts doing things like reprinting and still labeling them first prints its going to piss a lot of collectors off. Whats the point in buying originally if a second "first print" is going to be released later....

Maybe they'll be released as a sealed set in a cardboard framebox and shrinkwrapped that can't be broken up unless they're openned. They'll call it a special edition collectors set or some crap. If it's that way I'm not buying it. If the covers are actually different, hmmm...

I will one up you...it will be sealed in a box, shrink wrapped, and come with a special cover only available with the set.

My local shops told me that they had to be ordered in set, but clearly they didn't have to sell then that way.
They also said you had to order a set % higher number of copies than your last ASM order. Consequently, none of my local shops got ANY of the variant covers. I ordered mine from midtowncomics.com - they had already sold out of the red on (which is the one I like the best) so I had to ebay that one for 4X the price of the others. I'm trying to get the FanExpo variant, but I can't see paying more than $40 for it. Anyone else fed up with all of the variants? I consider myself a collector, so I've never really been concerned with value or appreciation - I just want to complete my collection. I don't even really care that muh about rarity. I think the convention-specific variants are cool, a neat way to reward the attendees, but having one or more variants for every issue of a comic that comes out 3 times a month is getting really annoying (and expensive). |

I hear ya. If you're complaining now, wait til 700 at 7.99 reg cover then ALL the variants that go with it. That'll be a crazy and expensive hunt for the ASM fans. The one I'm interested most in is the unused Ditko art variant.

Yep. I got the same way after all the AvX variants for each issue that came out. I think there are at least 6 different variant covers for each one of those and there is a lot of stock still on the shelves for AvX. tangledwebs said: The one I'm interested most in is the unused Ditko art variant. Why do I have a feeling that'll be a 1:200 variant at $150.00 or more. ![]() |

I collected mainly ASM from early 80's until mid 90's. I got out of comics altogether at the height of the speculation boom. Just started collecting/reading again in April.
It took me a few months to get up to speed, but I started back up with ASM and AvX and have been picking up back issues to fill in the gap. This practice of releasing variant covers feel an awful lot like the 90's speculation boom/bust. I've seen several issues for various titles initially priced at $100 plus and then a month later, they can't unload it for $25. I've been pretty disappointed in the art & writing of ASM since I started again I loved "Ends of The Earth" but didn't really care for the lizard/morbius story, and I hate the Alpha storyline. I'm probably going to stick with it until #700, but then I think I'm done with Spidey. |

I agree with these variants being unfair. The biggest retailer in Massachusetts didn't even carry these variants. I don't even want to think about whats going to happen with the #700 variants. I found my sets of variants at a local magazine store. Which I suppose wouldn't have a problem ordering a larger % of their previous month's order to get the variants. I lucked out and was able to get two sets of each variant and a few extra venom issues. I just put one set up on e-bay to see how it goes. I'll probably hold on to the others for a while.

I still don't see the variants as the same thing as the speculation of the 90s because you still have the original version of the issue that retains cover price. Variants are purely for collectors and retailers know the risk when they order more just to get them. Just because they have extra stock doesn't mean they didn't make a profit either, so you can't just go by how many of the original didn't sell.
I see variants as purely a win-win unless you're a completist, then I can see getting mad at some of the ratios. But a retailer does not have to pay attention to them at all to run a business. |
