SPOILERS:

other than doom's unnecessary death at the end, what was wrong with this series? they just cleaned house and got rid of annoying characters. magneto was cool, but he is by no means the ULTIMATE villain here. for something as epic as this miniseries, it needed to be a bigger mastermind behind the whole thing. magneto's cool and all, but really... he had to die after he basically became a joke. he had one arm.

I thought Ultimatum as a series wasn't too bad. Even when characters were dying off and it simply seemed as if it was for the sake of killing characters and didn't lend too much to the story. I guess the fun part about the Ultimate Universe is that writers have the leeway to try out things that they could never do in the Marvel Universe.

Lots of pieces left to be picked up after this series, it'll be interesting to see where the Ultimate Universe goes next.

it will be interesting to see what millar and pacheco do with the remaining ultimates... and was scarlet witch apparently behind it all? or was that someone new or not yet ultimate-ized?

i don't know. it seemed like a lot of unnecessary death just for shock value. i don't really know how they plan on rebuilding the ultimate U after that disaster...

I'd start with the Ultimates 1, 2, and 3 before reading Ultimatum. Actually, if you wanted to go the quick route you could read Ultimates 3 and then Ultimatum and not feel lost. Hitting up some of the Ultimate X-Men stuff would help for backstory, but is not completely neccessary to read Ultimatum.

I really, really enjoyed the Ultimates 1 & 2 and would recommend them to anyone. Ultimates 3 wasn't as good, but sets up most of the stuff that goes down in Ultimatum.

the ultimate universe stories can pretty much be summed up as follows:

before loeb and after loeb.

if you like jeph loeb, don't read the stuff before it. if you don't like jeph loeb, start with ultimate power, then read ultimates 3, followed by the ultimate hulk and ultimate captain america annuals, and then ultimatum.

otherwise, i'd suggest the millar and bendis stuff, starting with ultimate spider-man (as much as i hate bendis, it's all pretty decent) and ultimate x-men 1-about 30ish, ultimate war, ultimate fantastic four 1-6 and 20-32, and ultimates 1 and 2. if it's not millar or bendis, it's probably unrelated to the ultimate universe.

personally, for the "full effect" of the tragic deaths in loeb's run, you should probably try to read as much leading up to his hostile takeover. if you don't really care, like me, just start with ultimate power number 9. that's when loeb came in and started breaking things.

this is pretty accurate. the ultimate universe was pretty happy-go-lucky for quite a while when it first came around.... all the characters were young again, but modernized. then, about halfway through, things started getting a lot more serious (probably towards the end of ultimates 2, late spider-man after the carnage stuff, and in ultimate x-men once "cable" came along).... and it quickly spiraled into a big ol' pile of killing.

I lost faith in the Ultimate U during Kirkman's run on Ultimate X-Men. Ultimatum just solidified the fact that I won't be buying any of the relaunched titles.
