Swamp Thing # 1 (DC Comics 2015)

Swamp Thing is back and better than ever, scarier, larger and greener. Swamp Thing made its debut in January and is written by the original creator Len Wein. Swamp Thing #1 is the first in a six-part mini-series and illustrated by Kelley Jones, who breathes life into this story with wild abandon.

Wein gets right down to the brass tacks, not rehashing Swamp Things extensive history, but giving readers an all new story. Wein starts with Swamp Things origin, which acknowledges Swamp Thing’s unique metamorphosis from human to monster. His first encounter as this transformed monstrous being is an expertly illustrated fight between him and a huge gator who sees Swamp Thing as his next meal. Directly after the fight sequence Wein introduces the next characters, The Phantom Stranger and the Wormwoods who are in dire need of Swamp Things help.

Swamp Thing is a perfect example of a book that is essentially a horror comic, set in a superhero universe. It is a deep look into the darker side of the DCU. I give this all-new story two thumbs up! Great read and fantastic art!

  • I have been following the creation of this comic from it's inception through images posted on facebook by the amazingly talented Kelley Jones. I have no doubt that the visuals in each issue are as spectacular as one can imagine. I have yet to purchase a single issue, however. This is large in part due to my very disappointing experience with the same writer/artist duo who produced last years Convergence two-parter of the same character. I actually only bought issue #1 and was so unhappy with the result, that it soured me from wanting to read anything more from them on this title. I am first, an Alan Moore fan. I could give a ratsass about Swampy until Alan came on to transform the character from a straight up horror to a vehicle for social commentary. I respect Len for his returning to the muck monster he once birthed, but this green goliath is always Alan's baby in my heart. It's just too hard for me to split from the greatness of the past. Let the jade giant finally be at rest.
