Healing factor. Deadpool's abilities are man-made, derived from samples of Wolverine's mutation, but expanded to an almost limitless degree, allowing him to regenerate entire body parts, and even his entire body, making him effectively immortal. The healing factor also provides immunity to most poisons and illnesses, and probably extended lifespan. Like Wolverine, Deadpool has memory issues due to his ability. However, unlike Wolverine's healing factor, Deadpool's can be consciously driven by his own willpower. Beyond simple healing, Deadpool is also a master of uncounted unarmed and armed combat styles, is preternaturally strong and flexible, and is proficient with a variety of weapons, though he is not a terribly good shot. Deadpool now also has access to the bodysliding teleportation technology used by Cable due to the mixing of their DNA.
The man who would one day become Deadpool was originally named Jack. After a short stint in the military, he became a mercenary, but he only killed those he felt deserved it. He wasn't the best shot, so when he failed, he routinely used plastic surgery and technology to take on a new identity. Once, when Jack was injured while escaping from his angry employers, he was taken in by Wade and Mercedes Wilson, who nursed him back to health. Jack eventually attacked Wade, hoping to steal his identity, and left him for dead, but accidentally killed Mercedes as well. Murdering the innocent Mercedes completely unhinged Jack's already unstable personality and he became convinced that he was Wade Wilson. He returned to his mercenary activities under that name.

"Wilson's" early mercenary activities are relatively unknown, but it is clear that after a failed romance in Tangier, Morocco, with a woman named Francie, he traveled across Asia and eventually was hired in Japan by the Boss to infiltrate a sumo-wrestling ring owned by the Oyakata, a rival. For three years Wilson posed as a wrestler became romantically involved with Oyakata's daughter, Sazae. When the Boss finally ordered the Oyakata's murder, Wilson refused to complete his assignment and fled Japan.

Returning to America, Wilson fell in love with Vanessa Carlysle, a teenage prostitute, with whom he shared dreams of a better life. Soon, Middle Eastern interests hired him to assassinate a blind British government operative named Althea, also known as Blind Al. Wilson killed everyone at the base except for Al, who escaped. Vanessa was targeted by Wilson's employers as punishment for failure, but she was rescued by Zoe Culloden, an employee of the interdimensional firm Landau, Luckman, Lake, and LeQuare. Culloden had been keeping Wilson under surveillance, believing he was destined to play a vital role in saving the world, based on some prophecies her firm had accessed.

Wilson then broke up with Vanessa, because he had contracted cancer and did not want to cause her more pain. However, Canada's Department K, a special weapons development branch of the Canadian government, offered him a deal, and Wilson became a test subject in Department K's branch of Weapon X, the U.S./Canadian superhuman enhancement project. The process used a version of Wolverine's healing factor, and the cancer went into remission. As a member of Department K, Wilson was assigned to a field team with Sluggo and the cyborgs Kane and Slayback. Vanessa soon joined as Copycat after her mutant shapeshifting abilities manifested. However, Wilson soon killed his teammate Slayback for unknown reasons.

Wilson's health worsened and he was sent to the Hospice, which was supposed to be a government hospital where superhuman operatives were treated. However, Doctor Killebrew and his sadistic assistant, the Attending, secretly experimented on their patiends, with the patients placing bets in a "deadpool" as to how long each subject would live. Killebrew worked on Wilson for a long time, torturing him physically and emotionally. While in the Hospice, Wilson became close with the cosmic entity Death, who regarded him as a kindred spirit. Surviving the worst of Killebrew's tortures with pure emotional strength, Wilson earned the respect of the other patients. However, when the Attending, angered by Wilson's taunts, lobotomized one of Wilson's friends, Wilson killed his friend to end his suffering. Under the house rules, though, any patient who killed another was himself killed, and the Attending ripped out Wilson's heart. Wilson's lust for revenge was so strong that it boosted his healing factor, regenerating his heart, although it didn't cure his body scars. Wilson then attacked the Attending, and escaped from the Hospice with his fellow patients. He took the name "Deadpool" as a memento of his time in the Hospice.

Deadpool then served for a time as an enforcer for the crime boss Hammerhead. Returning to his freelance mercenary activities afterwards, he made costume for himself and his "secret identity." He was employed during this period by the Kingpin, and also clashed with Wolverine, who was at that time a spy for the Canadian government. Deadpool caught up with Blind Al and imprisoned her in his home. Deadpool killed anyone whom Al sought for help, and eventually she stopped trying to escape.

Some years passed, and Deadpool returned to work for the Canadian government so he could be treated by Doctor Walter Langkowski, (Sasquatch of Alpha Flight). However, he soon left, as government work didn't suit him, and he was hired by the criminal Wizard, but first he went to the wrong address and got a job impersonating the criminal Hobgoblin. Eventually he joined with fellow criminals the Taskmaster and the Constrictor in a brief version of the Frightful Four. Deadpool then tried to return to being the Kingpin's assassin, but he was thwarted by the new assassin, Bullseye. Deadpool began hanging the mercenary hangout called the Hellhouse, where the diminutive "Patch" (not to be confused with Logan's alias) doled out assignments. He clashed with another assassin named T-Ray, who was also a sorcerer. Later, the time-traveling arms merchant Tolliver hired him, and he worked again with Sluggo and Copycat. Deadpool also found a man named Weasel to act as his weapon supplier, and amazingly they became friends.

After some time, Tolliver sent Deadpool was sent to kill Cable (Tolliver's own father). Deadpool was handily defeated by Cable and the New Mutants. After Cable renamed his team X-Force, Kane tracked Deadpool down and fought him to a draw. Later, Deadpool infiltrated X-Force's compound and revealed that Copycat had been impersonating Domino for months, nearly killing her in the process. Cable managed to beat Deadpool, and Tolliver was apparently killed when his chopper exploded. Tolliver's will was revealed to the merc community, which set off a search by those he employed for the "Ultimate Weapon." Deadpool's search led him to find Slayback, whose cyborg parts prevented him from dying from Deadpool's attack years before and who wanted revenge. Copycat got in the middle of the fight and was severely injured, so Deadpool gave up some of his healing factor to save her.

Some time afterwards, Deadpool helped X-Force member Siryn against the unstoppable Juggernaut and her uncle, Black Tom Cassidy, who had forced Killebrew into their service. Deadpool developed a strong attachment to Tom's niece (and X-Forcer) Siryn, who only partially returned his feelings. Unsure of his worthiness, Deadpool sought out Copycat, only to find she was now dating Kane. Deadpool fought both Kane and Wolverine, who had been sent to check on Kane by a mutual friend. Deadpool was subsequently abducted by information brokers seeking a cure for the Legacy Virus but was rescued by Wolverine and the mutant mercenary Maverick. Later, Siryn got into some trouble while working undercover at the Weisman Institute for the Criminally Insane, and called on Deadpool to come help her. They went looking for the head of the institute, Doctor Weisman, but were watched by a ten year-old boy called Jeremy Stevens, who stopped them inside the office. Wade was bound and gagged and brought to see Jeremy and Dr. Weisman, who believe that Deadpool is actually mentally unstable. Siryn was returned to Xavier's with no memory of Deadpool's arrival.

Weeks later, Siryn finally remembered what occured at the Weisman Institute. Siryn and Shatterstar raced to rescue Wade, but were harrassed by what looked like multiple Deadpools, then by lots of pre-cancer Wades. Siryn avoided the duplicate Wades and found the real Deadpool sitting in a corner going mad, and he asked her to kill him. Before Siryn could decide, the Gamesmaster appeared and revealed that he was controlling Weisman (and Jeremy?), but now let Wade and Siryn go. Deadpool stole a kiss from Siryn, then headed back to work.

Soon afterward, Deadpool was approached by Zoe Culloden of Landau, Luckman, and Lake. The firm had been surveilling him for years, as they believed he was destined to be the Mithras, a being who would help bring a golden age to Earth. Deadpool refused but then endured a number of personal failures, and alienated Weasel and Blind Al. He tried to stop killing for a while, but the ghosts of his former Weapon X inmates coerced him into killing the Attending, now known as Ajax. Deadpool returned to Culloden and accepted her offer, but was disappointed to find out that he was only supposed to kill Tiamat, a potential threat to the arriving "Messiah." Instead, Deadpool killed the Messiah after learning that it brought mindless bliss, and not real peace.

Deadpool then returned to his mercenary life. On the counsel of deranged psychiatrist Doctor Bong, he tried to work out his difficulties in a fight with Wolverine. It sort of worked, but then Deadpool's psyche was shattered by the resurrection of Mercedes Wilson, whom he still believed to be his wife. T-Ray then revealed himself as the true Wade Wilson, who had resurrected his long-dead wife. T-Ray had hoped that this knowledge would break Deadpool, but it didn't, because now he could still hope to improve himself as a person.

Deadpool again clashed with Wolverine, during an assassination job against Duncan Vess, a writer whom it turned out was a werewolf, but they defeated Vess's kin together and parted on good terms. Weeks later, Deadpool brought Siryn, who had been injured in a mission with X-Force, to the Watchtower group for advanced medical treatment. The Watchtower had Deadpool capture Wolverine in exchange for and to accomplish Siryn's treatment. Using Wolverine's healing factor, Siryn was cured, and Logan fought his way out. However, Siryn did not fulfill any of Wade's fantasies in gratitude for his help and left him hanging.

Deadpool briefly shared an apartment with fellow mercenaries Titania and the Constrictor. Titania was really Copycat in disguise, and the apartment was soon destroyed by the Wizard and the Taskmaster, both seeking revenge on Deadpool for his role in their failed Frightful Four. Deadpool then built a secret headquarters and took on a sidekick who called Kid Deadpool. However, Kid Deadpool was the son of one of Wade's victims, and he blew up the warehouse as revenge.

Deadpool was then tracked down by the Sabretooth and somewhat forcibly recruited into the new Weapon X Program. In return, Weapon X upgraded of his healing factor. However, Deadpool soon found their methods to be too brutal even for him. When Sabretooth killed Copycat, Deadpool confronted the Director, only to have his healing factor reversed to the point where his body lost physical cohesion and he died. Fortunately, his upgraded healing factor upgrade saved Deadpool from a permanent demise, but it left him with amnesia. Deadpool was able to regain his memory by contacting Weasel, and found that four other people had claimed his name in his absence. The four impostors were really aspects of Deadpool's own personality given form by T-Ray through a device called the Gemini Star. T-Ray had been hired to kill Deadpool by Thanos, who was jealous of Wade's relationship with Death. The plan was to kill each part of Wade's persona, leaving him a blank, but Deadpool damaged the Gemini Star, causing his personality fragments to be absorbed into T-Ray, who was sent into a coma. Deadpool continued claiming to be the true Wade Wilson.

After he supposedly took out the powerful Four Winds crime family, Deadpool's mercenary reputation skyrocketed and he formed a company called DP, Inc., aided by a new business partner, Sandi Brandenberg. DP, Inc. was even hired to provide security for Dazzler II on a reunion tour. The success was fleeting, as the Black Swan, a fellow assassin who had actually slain the Four Winds himself, sought vengeance for Deadpool's wrongful claim. Both men were believed dead after an explosive battle, but in reality the Swan's telepathy merged his own memories, skills and abilities on a genetic level with those of Deadpool inside the corpse of his underling Nijo. Deadpool's healing factor resurrected Nijo, who found his way to Sandi's apartment. Sandi believed Nijo to be Deadpool and nursed him back to health. Choosing the name Alex Hayden after the Black Swan's favorite composers, Nijo joined Sandi and the Taskmaster in a new mercenary endeavor, Agency X. See Agent X.

The Black Swan eventually recovered and brought Deadpool to meet with Agent X so all three men could return to their previous states. However, the Swan betrayed both Deadpool and Nijo during the memory transfer, absorbing all of their abilities and achieving great power. Nijo was able to break through the Swan's telepathic shield and defeat him, reversing the transfer back to himself and Deadpool. Deadpool declined an offer to join Agency X, returning to his solo career.

Deadpool was then hired by the One World Church to steal the Faade Virus from Sunic Pharmacopoeia in Germany. The Church sought to use the virus to transform everyone into blue-skinned beings like themselves, and Deadpool was infected by the Virus, which healed his scars but also turned him blue. However, Cable realized that Faade was unstable, and indeed, Wade began to melt, while Cable (also infected) was being compromised by his own T-O virus, which was fighting Faade. To save themselves, Cable had to absorb Wade, causing their DNA to merge, so that Deadpool could heal Cable's Faade infectioin and Cable's T-O virus could corral Wade's Faade Virus. Cable then vomited up a puddle that re-formed into Deadpool. An interesting side effect of this DNA merge is that Deadpool gained access to Cable's "bodyslide" technology, but not without a hitch. Bodysliding by one caused the two men to merge again, though bodysliding by two caused them to appear separately in the same place. It seems, however, that Cable found a way to keep a bodyslide from automatically picking Wade up too, though they still share DNA which can be used to track each other.

Deadpool remained based on Cable's Providence island, but was often abroard. When S.H.I.E.L.D. attacked Cable for threatening the world's supply of nuclear bombs, Deadpool was assigned to join the X-Men and infiltrate the base. He betrayed the X-Men for uncertain reasons, but it was part of Cable's plan, and Cable asked Wade to lobotomize him with a time-displacement unit to shut down his ever-increasing powers. Deadpool agreed, and though it saved lives, he felt a bit guilty, so he turned to the Fixer, who was able to save Cable by grafting an alien (Phalanx) baby onto his failing T-O mesh. Deadpool returned to Providence, but for some reason killed the world's most wanted terrorist, who had been staying there as well. Wade didn't recall doing it, but figured out that it must have been him, as did Cable. After a brief fight with Prester John, Deadpool confronted Cable, who exiled him from Providence. Deadpool then sought the help of the Black Box to finally end his miserable existence.

However, the Black Box tried to mindwipe Deadpool into his pet assassin, and set him off to kill the world's premier danger, which Wade figured was Cable. Cable had disappeared while fighting the Skornn, and Irene and Forge, along with Cannonball and Siryn use Wade's genetic link to Cable to track the time-lost mutant and teleport across the space-time continuum to find him.

With the passing of the SHRA, Deadpool tried to apprehend the Great Lakes Champions as un-registered combatants, only to be summarily trounced, and embarrased when they told him they had already registered. However, his antics had the effect he desired, as a S.H.I.E.L.D. regional agent arrived and recruited Deadpool to be a licensed bounty hunter. However, when Deadpool tried to attack the Secret Avengers he was soundly thumped and tied up until Cable returned to take him to the White House for a meeting with the President. Deadpool turned on Cable, trying to live up to his badge, but he was thwarted.

Shortly afterwards, following Cable's assumption of the Presidency of Rumekistan, Deadpool was hired to join the revamped Six Pack, Cable's old merc team. He snuck into Providence and blew up a reactor, mostly as a distraction, causing Cable to be caught off guard in Rumekistan, where he was confronted by the Pack. Deadpool, however, shot Cable in the head, but it was all according to Cable's plan, as he revealed the terrorist acts committed by the Pack just to make him look bad and personally held together the country's technical infrastructure as he exiled the team from his borders. Worse, Deadpool was affected by a post-hypnotic suggestion that made him see visions of all the people he killed. Cable had hoped it would help Wade reconcile with him, but it didn't and they remained on poor terms.

Lately Deadpool has joined the Skrulls in order to sabatoge there plans on orders from Nick Fury.
