Cessilys body is made up of a non-toxic metallic substance that allows her to take a liquid form and reconstitute into her normal form. Its believed that she can take whatever form she pleases, so her normal form may not actually be what she looks like. As a child, Cessilys body turned to metal which disturbed her parents, who made her stay inside to keep others from asking questions. When she was sent to the Xavier Institute she became friends with Julian Keller, and also took Emma Frost as her advisor. After the school was rebuilt, she joined the Hellions squad, taking the code name Mercury. She has developed a crush on her teammate Wither, though he does not reciprocate her feelings.
When the Hellions went to their leader Julian's house for vacation, Mercury (along with the others) received a trial wish from the Kingmaker. Cessily's parents suddenly warmed to her and were even proud of her mutation. However, when the Hellions eventually refused a permanent deal with the Kingmaker, the mind control that had been used on the Kincaids was reversed, and Cessily returned to the Institute, with her parents still disliking her.

House of M

Mercury was a student at the New Mutant Leadership Institute, and was close with Laurie Garrison. When she learned of Prodigy III's plan to help Surge find her terrorist father in Japan, she was against going, but then Laurie (a deep cover S.H.I.E.L.D. agent) changed her mind. Once in Japan, the kids found the Project Genesis the terrorists were trying to stop, and Laurie revealed her loyalties, making the Hellions attack the New Mutants. Mercury, however, was immune to pheromones, and pleaded with her friend to stop. When Laurie refused, Cessily was forced to stab her in the gut. Afterwards, Mercury joined the survivors in a last-ditch assault on Emperor Sunfire's forces.

After M-Day

In the aftermath of M-Day, Cessily retained her powers and so remained at the Mansion. Then, while she was out in the town with X-23, Mercury was captured by the Facility, who tortured her and took samples of her metallic body. They used the material to grow and bond a metal skin to their Predator X hunters. Fortunately, Hellion and X-23 invaded the facility and (when the X-Men arrived) rescued Cessily. She was able to re-absorb the metal from at least one of the Predators, but one escaped, and she could still feel its presence. The psychological effects of this trauma were severe, and the physical are still unknown.
